adroper
I am looking to set up an extremely amateur recording studio at my home. This includes a Presonus Firebox, a Shure SM57 Microphone, a MIDI keyboard, and Logic Express 8. Is this enough for a basic studio? Do I need a recording monitor? I don't even know what monitors do really, so you can see I'm not very experienced. Any help?
fisherking
what mac? you need to add your mac etc in your forum signature... monitors...you mean speakers? better speakers always make a difference, altho some people work in headphones. SOME sort of speakers are needed of course. what are you planning on listening thru?
adroper
k. sorry for the lack of info. I'm using a iMac G5 running 10.4.11. I've already mentioned the rest of the gear that I plan to get. So I am planning on just using headphones while recording, which means I don't need monitors, right? Are monitors just speakers? I already have nice speakers, too. It's hard for me to find basic info online, being a beginner.
triplets
If you have good headphones, then you don't need monitors.
00420
...basic info online, being a beginner. This guide has a lot of good info for people who are brand new to recording: http://www.tweakheadz.com/guide.htm Here's the section specifically on monitors: http://www.tweakheadz.com/studio_monitors.htm And to answer your question, no you don't necessarily need monitors, although you will want to eventually get some.
