Simple MIDI channel question for Software Inst.

I can load up a simple software instrument say like Steinway Piano Hall. I hit my keyboard controller and it plays as expected. Now, I have my keyboard controller set to channel 1, If I go into the inspector for the Steinway instrument and tell it to use channel 2, the controller still triggers the instrument.

What am I doing wrong?

It all depends on what you are trying to accomplish. I mean, you have a controller, why are you changing the midi channels when midi channel 1 is basically all you need?

Are you trying to use more than one controller? A split keyboard? Are you familiar with the Environment?

OK - here is the deal :)

I have a GI-20 midi guitar and a Fatar 88 key controller. These both go into an MX-8 MIDI patch bay. Their data is merged into a single port that goes into the Mac. I want 1 track set with a horn instrument (for the guitar) and a piano instrument on another. The Fatar is on Channel 1 and the GI-20 is on channel 2.

It seemed "logical" to me to assign the midi channel for a given track to respond to just channel 1 or 2. But, apparently, this is not the case...

Thanks for the reply(ies), Shiver :)
