Logic Pro / Max for Ableton Live.

Recommended Posts

Unless I missed a big part on Logic, there's no modular environnement allowing you to create your own audio modules.

But I think nothing stops you from using max/msp to create your modules and use them on Logic (the pluggo works as a vst to au wrapper).

I've been reading up on MAX/MSP (Ableton & Cycling '74) for Ableton Live.

Is there any similar function available within Logic 8.02 or 9?

From a MIDI and control standpoint, Max is similar to Logic's Environment. Max does have lower level functions that would let you go beyond what the Environment can do, and MSP allows creation of audio processors, but that's very, very dependent on what programming skills you already have. The learning curve is significantly higher for Max/MSP. Actually, learning Logic's Environment is a good precursor to learning Max.

Pluggo has been discontinued. You will not be able to use your MSP constructions in anything but Live/Max.

I use Max as an external instrument or effect from Logic. Kind of the best of both worlds.

I knew pluggo was discontinued but thought he could still use it inside Logic ( I have the free plug ins that come with it and they work here (L9). Though didn't know new msp modules will work only in Ableton Live.

Back to the OP, as said Fader 8, strictly midi speaking you can do a lot already with Logic environnement.

Have a look [=http://logicprohelp.com/viewforum.php?f=9url]here[/url] for an idea of what's possible.

Yes, any existing plugs that use the Pluggo runtime will work. But the ability to construct these left with Max 5. You can still do it with Max 4. You'll only be able to build plug-ins for Live with Max 5.

I think they got tired of the rat-race of supporting so many formats on so many hosts on multiple platforms. Can't blame'em really. So they settled on Ableton Live, which makes sense as Max has always been focused for live performance. Since Live has always been crap for MIDI processing and audio effects, and Max never had a sequencer, it's a pretty good marriage of technologies.
