How do I make my guitar sound real using Presonus Firebox?

Recommended Posts

I just got a new Presonus Firebox and overall, I am pretty happy with it! I don't have Logic yet (I ordered it online and it should arrive in a few days). Meanwhile, I'm just using Garageband to lay down a few guitar tracks for fun. The only problem I have with the Presonus is that it just makes the guitar sound a bit digital. Is there any way I can bring back the warmth of the acoustic guitar? Any recommendations for how to do this for Logic Express will help in the future as well.

The Firebox is not going to be the problem. Modern digital recording (even "low resolution" CD quality) is effectively transparent - what comes out is the same as what went in, within the limits of the analog signal path it's housed within, and human perception.

If the sound is harsh or tinny, then it's more likely your room, mic, mic placement, or an effect that is on the track in GarageBand. Or are you recording from an acoustic guitar's built-in pickup? Those will always sound "plinky" and harsh compared to a nice mic in a nice room.

The quality of an interface is really, REALLY subtle, to the point of inaudibility under most normal listening conditions. If your recordings don't sound good yet with the FireBox, a higher-end device should not make a noticeable improvement. The problem has got to be elsewhere, most likely in mic placement, room acoustics, or recording technique.

I figured that the Firebox wasn't the problem. i am recording through an acoustic pick-up and the sound quality is pretty good. But there's just a little bit of warmth missing or something. I was thinking if maybe there is something more along the lines of a plug-in or the EQ I could do to fix it.

That's got to be it. Using a microphone instead of the built-in pickup should do the trick. In a pinch, the Fishman Aura system can help too.
