Rundfunk
Hey guys, Im looking into getting a mic pre, although my interface is a crappy m-audio fastrack ultra. I dont have much knowledge about S/PDIF but according to SSL Their Pre-amp has a S/PDIF Output which would ignore my interfaces pre-amps! (THIS IS WHAT I WANT IT TO DO!) Is it really that easy? Just plug the SSL Pre into my S/PDIF In on my interface and away we go? If I plug the SSL Pre into my interface using a S/PDIF cable then will the signal come through channel one without being colored by my interfaces crappy pre? Sorry if these questions sound stupid, but Ive never worked with S/PDIF before so Im quite clueless. Thanks guys!
triplets
You still have to deal with the shitty converters on the M-Audio, because your signal still has to come back out to the speakers, and that's where the last D/A conversion takes place. It's better for sure, but I would spend the money on a better interface.
Rundfunk
oh okay cool, thank you for the information I am looking at getting a new interface also, My budget is £400 no more. Im thinking about either the Focusrite Saffire Pro 40, or the Motu 8pre. I notice you have the Ultralite, so was wondering if you could tell me wether or not you think the motu pre's and A/D - D/A converters are any good? The quality of the Pre's and the A/D - D/A conversion are the only things Ill be paying for Thanks
triplets
Motu stuff is the best before you start spending the big bucks, meaning above 1400 bucks. I'm happy with the Ultralite. Great little unit. It has SPDIF. Remember the 8pre doesn't have SPDIF if you want to use that feature.
