just wondering whats a good way of creating beat

for trance and hip-hop

Ultrabeat's Step Sequencer. It comes with grooves that you can edit if inspiration doesn't strike!

 

If you like to write your beats in the matrix, try the step input mode. It allows you to input beats one by one on your controller keyboard while always recording the notes on the grid.

 

Or simply play them live, then quantize and further manipulate.

 

If you're still bored, there are exciting softwares out there such as BFD or Stylus RMX that comes with tons of grooves and really cool sounds. But that's yet another expense!

I think Ultrabeat's Step Sequencer is pretty cool but it won't let you see several instruments at once... so you can also grab a pattern and drag it to an Arrange track to see it in the matrix.

 

It makes it easy to see how a groove is constructed, and adapt it to your needs.
