natdame
Hi-- I am trying to set up a multi-timbral instrument. So I add an instrument, it's multi-timbral. Then, as an input, I use SampleTank and I click Multi-output 16X stereo. The whole thing spikes out into the red and I can't fix it. What did I do wrong? I look at videos of people doing this on youtube and it comes out fine for them. Also, when I add AUX tracks in order to send the different tracks through the AUX channels, I don't get the option to send them out to 3-4, 5-6, etc. It just has a check mark on Stereo Output. I am in the Music for Picture template, because I am scoring a film. Is this part of the problem? So, basically my question is why is it spiking out, how do I fix it, and how do I reassign the AUX channels to 1-2, 3-4, etc.? Thanks to anyone who can help. I've been working on this one problem for like ten days.
Jordi Torres
Try this project, it has a multi-timbral, 16-stereo-output version of sampletank. Maybe you could make sense of it by checking it out. If you get the same results you've been getting, then the problem is something else. Here it works fine, no clipping, no weird stuff. J. natdame
Hi-- Thank you. I put it in and it all looked fine. On this you don't get the option to change the outputs either--they all go to Stereo Output. Why is that? BUT then I pressed play and all the channels spiked to red and there was a buzzing sound coming out of the speakers. What could the problem be? Jordi Torres
they all go to Stereo Output. Why is that? What do you mean? Do you want to route the aux channels to different outputs in your audio interface? You choose which of the plug-in's outputs you want by clicking the input slots in the aux channel strips: http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4130/5193261109_27590a6a48.jpg BUT then I pressed play and all the channels spiked to red and there was a buzzing sound coming out of the speakers. What could the problem be? I'm not sure what's going on there.... J.
natdame
In the picture you are showing the input--I'm talking about the output. I'm not given options for channel outputs. Could that be what's causing the spiking? The spiking is still happening.
Jordi Torres
How many outputs in your audio interface? J.

You will get the option to select No Output, Stereo Out, Surround, Mono Output 1, Mono Output 2, Bus & Binaural. This is all normal. Try bringing down the Volume Faders to get yourself out of the Red.
natdame
I am not using an audio interface. Right now I'm not even attached to a midi. When I click and hold Stereo Out, shouldn't it give a list, like Output 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, etc? Also, the volume doesn't affect the spiking at all. natdame
I'm going to take it to TekServe to see if someone can look at it and tell me what's wrong. Thanks.
Jordi Torres
When I click and hold Stereo Out, shouldn't it give a list, like Output 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, etc? Only if you have more than one output pair in your core audio device. You got things mixed up. You set whichever output pair of your 16 stereo out plug-in as the input in the aux channel strips....from there you can route it to available outputs in the core audio device (audio interface or built-in), a bus, etc. J. natdame
Okay, thanks guys. Still can't figure out why it's all spiking like that.
Jordi Torres
Okay, thanks guys. Still can't figure out why it's all spiking like that. Something must be going on with the plug-in or who knows what. You could determine if the plug-in is causing the problem (or not) by loading one of logic's own plugs in their multi-output form. Try with ultrabeat, for example. J.
natdame
Ultrabeat seems to be okay. It must be the IK multimedia package... Thanks!
natdame
AHA! Someone at TekServe showed me what's up. It spikes out when I put Multi Output (16xstereo), but not if I just put "Stereo". So how come I see videos of guys on youtube doing 16xstereo? Does it not spike out when you guys use that? Still trying to figure out how to mix the tracks separately, but at least it's not spiking out now.
natdame
SOLVED: Just got some more help. I didn't need to build a multi-timbral instrument at all. I didn't understand what it was for. That is the problem. What I needed to do was learn about the FREEZE feature, so I can load in one instrument per track without over loading it. I build the track and then freeze it so I retain the processing power to build the rest of the tracks. Thanks to everyone for pitching in to help me.
