Buying used software?

Recommended Posts

The risk is that the seller may not own the license. He can sell you software pre-installed, or a download, or even a set of discs that were manufactured by Apple, but that doesn't mean he owns the license. He could even own the license, sell it to you, then sell it to someone else as well. In that case, Apple will detect that and kill the serial number, rendering your license worthless.

The risk is also that the person is selling you an NFR (Not For Resale), or Academic license. Those licenses cannot be upgraded.

I would only buy used software from a trusted source or a very close friend, and I would NEVER, EVER buy used software without the original proof of purchase or receipt.

David makes great points, although on the flip side I have bought a ton of used software (and sold a couple of plugins). was nervous about it at first, but the forum I frequent has a good reputation, been around for a long time and in their marketplace section there is a 520 page long sellers review section (sort of like ebay). all of the sales are license transfers and go through the manufacturer, you just download from the manufacturers site. no bad experiences yet. well, once some guy misrepresented the version he was selling, and it wasn't mac compatible. he refunded my money immediately when I objected.

i haven't bought any physical product (and most likely never will), I do a quick google about companies resale policies before i buy, I don't buy from people who have not sold anything before, and when I have sold stuff I was well aware of the rating system and made sure I completed the license transfer quickly to make it a pleasant experience for the buyer. i can only remember a couple of people complaining about getting ripped off over the last few years, and they bought from an unproven seller. not sure if it's kosher to mention other sites, but if it's acceptable I can point you to the forum (it's a big one and you probably know of it).

that said, I would NEVER buy software off ebay.
