nickseifert
I've been making a lot of recordings lately and I generally use nothing but the built in sound library and my midi piano, but I'm having some issues getting the exact sound I want for some of the covers I'm attempting. It seems like for most sounds, including strings, piano, and pretty much anything else I use besides brass, the built in instruments are perfect, and I can play them 'realistically.' However, for the life of me I can't get the brass instruments to sound right at all. I've got all the jam packs for garageband and all the logic sounds, but none of them capture that live horn sound. There's no buildup or falloff, and I'm not quite sure how to accomplish that. It's also probably worth noting that I'm mostly a logic novice, but it seems like I've found the right place to learn more! Anyone have any good techniques for reproducing that live brass (particularly trumpets) sound?
ski
Welcome to the forum. Brass (and sax) are the most difficult of the family of sampled instruments to make sound realistic. Not that there aren't techniques to getting more realism, but... are we talking big band? Tower of Power? Blues Brothers? Brecker Brothers? Etc... nickseifert
Thanks Looking more for a smaller sound, maybe 1-5 people playing. Around the 1 minute mark of this video is basically what I'm trying to recreate, but I'm failing horribly, lol.
SPUMD
I would say that you need a good library first. The best librarys that i know ... Wallander http://www.wallanderinstruments.com/?mode=products&lang=en Sample Modeling http://www.samplemodeling.com/en/products.php Wallander is covering the section sound and Sample Modeling is the best for solos Both libraries work with physical modeling techniques and that will go hard on CPU. If you work with an older MAC i would say a Chris Hein Library will do it for you http://www.chrishein.net/CHH%20V1.5/chhv1_productsite.htm. ski
Checked out that video, and at around the 1 minute mark there's a guy with wings playing the piano.
nickseifert
lol sorry, trumpets and such come in like 10 seconds after that. this one is a bit higher quality as far as sound: also, thanks for those suggestions about better instrument packs, I'll definitely look into those! ski
OK, that's a small string section (prominent violins) with an almost Mariachi-style vibrato solo trumpet at that point in the song. Definitely not a horn section.
nickseifert
Yeah I guess I should've clarified better, but that solo trumpet is what I'm mostly struggling with. Thanks for the quick responses, this seems like a pretty awesome forum so far .

Cool...love it...very sensitive lol sorry, trumpets and such come in like 10 seconds after that. this one is a bit higher quality as far as sound: also, thanks for those suggestions about better instrument packs, I'll definitely look into those! duuuude be more precise ... in my opinion you don't need any library for 10 sec Brass sound... if you really need some better Horns throw me the midi with a short description (cresendo bla bla bla) and i process it for you. ( if you put me on the guest list for your concert in Hamburg Germany) But i think you will let your horns sound much better if you look at the audience and involve them a little more into your performance...you and the guy look a little busy looking at the technical stuff. nickseifert
I don't really have anything concrete recorded yet, but I appreciate the offer!
nickseifert
Okay another quick question... I downloaded the Wallander brass instruments trial from their site, and installed the package, but I'm not seeing any new instruments inside Logic, and Wallander's website is void of any helpful support knowledge. When I opened Logic it had a popup window that said something like scanning new AUs, but it didn't seem to do anything, any ideas?

Look at the Logic Preferences and start the AU Manager...search for Wallander and look if it is checked/ validated.
nickseifert
Thanks for the help everyone. It seems like my biggest problem is not having the right software instruments. Logic's built in brass instruments pale in comparison to the stuff in the Wallander trial.
