kaleidoscopic
I want to make a violin portamento sliding slowly and smoothly from E to C. How to do this on Logic?
ski
If you're using EXS-24, you'd use "glide". But don't expect it to sound realistic. That's because by using glide you're stretching a sample, and when they get to the point where they're about 3 half steps away from the original they sound Mickey-Mousey and you're looking to go 8 half steps (if I read you right, E up to C). If realism is what you're after then you really need a library that provides authentic glisses. Short of that, yes, it IS possible to simulate a gliss but the method I'm thinking of would take a lot of very careful, tricky programming. kaleidoscopic
so do you have any plugin suggestion that can get this job done?
ski
Vienna Standard Edition is the one I use for portamenti. There are also sounds in Kirk Hunter and one of the Peter Seidleczek libraries (could be "Advanced Violins", though I'm not 100% sure).
marksealey
How good are the Kirk Hunter strings? How do they compare with VSL (he claims they're much better)? How do both compare with Apple Symphony Orchestra Jam Pack - for realism while composing classical music, not performance? TIA!
ski
To me, it's not a matter of "better or worse". They're all just different. It's like guitars. Aside from price point, the reason there are so many different brands is because they each have a different sound. You could say that the VSL strings have an overall more high-fidelity sound than the KH sounds, but fidelity alone is just one factor. For example, I can't stand the solo VSL cello. It has that typical VSL hi-fi sound, but I can't relate to the overall vibe of it. The vibrato is too generally too shallow and fast for my liking; sounds kind of "nervous". The only thing I'll use it for is the portamento samples. OTOH, the KH solo cello is not as pristine sounding but has a very warm tone and a vibrato which works well in a wide variety of styles. marksealey
Thanks, ski; that makes good sense! When I'm writing using the Jam Pack solo strings, they sound squeaky, shallow and very synthetic. Yet, aren't they licenced VSL? What I want to know is which of the alternatives (Kirk Hunter, VSL itself, LASS or even GPO) are likely to make a less 'artificial', manufactured sound in composing 'classical' music with MIDI. Johnny-Boy
I agree with Ski. I use the KH. They do take some editing, but usually I'm satisfied. Here's a recent track using the KH: http://schicksville.com/Music/Dance%20of%20Passion.mp3 It would be great if others would post their track examples of the different string samples. fuzzfilth
Siedlaczek's Advanced Orchestra and Miroslav Vitous' Symphonic Orchestra, both quite old by any standard. Christian
marksealey
Johny-Boy and fuzzfilth Thanks for those samples. They are way better than anything that the Symphonic Jam Packs do! BTW, another screencast I was looking at showed 'JamPack 1', 'JamPack 2' etc in the bottom of the presenter's Media Library list. Although I did a clean upgrade install of Pro/Studio (from Express) and do have 'Orchestral > Strings > Violin legato' etc, it isn't possible that I'm so dissatisfied with the sounds b/c the Apple originals somehow didn't get installed, is it? How can I tell? !!! TIA
