Rundfunk
Hey Guys, I'm looking to spend no more than £150 on a pair of headphones for referencing in my studio. I dont care about fancy features / good looks etc etc I just want a flat even frequency response with a great sound quality. I have been looking at the 'Beyerdynamic DT 770's', Senheiser HD 595's and the Shure SRH840's. Has anyone tried these models out, or does anyone have any recommendations? Cheers guys
Beer Moth
I use and like the DT 770s,but I need them to close off well, being a horn player. The Sennheisers are top notch, and one day I'll have pair of those too. Same Q's been discussed before: http://www.logicprohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=57007&highlight=headphones and http://www.logicprohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=55837&highlight=headphones
David Nahmani
Whatever you buy try to test them beforehand, because the shape of headphones and shape of your head have to match. Even if your best friend who's a top producer told you that headphones ABC are the absolute best in the world doesn't mean they'll fit your skull. Also watch for headphones that feel like they put your head in a vise.
shivermetimbers
I will be getting the AKG k702 in the mail tomorrow. I think they need to have a 200 hour burn in time before they work right. With a high quality amp they should sound pretty good. I will let you know ...
Rundfunk
Thank you guys for all your advice! David I live no where near any where that would allow me to try these products. I have to order everything over the internet and hope for the best lol. My friend has some HD 595's and they fit my 'skull' quite nicely! If i could afford it shivers I'd get myself some 702's, trouble is I ain't loaded. lol Thanks guys for your input, I think my best bet is to go for the 595's. I think they sound great and they fit my head too.
ruari
+1 For the DT770's I find them responsive enough & comfortable over long periods of time.
Rundfunk
I have been considering those too mate, but I have read many reviews from people who suggest that the mid's aren't very good. Obviously everyone has mixed opinions, which is why Id prefer to go try before I buy, the thing is, i live in the middle of no where and its just too stupid for me to travel 160miles to try some headphones. have you guys heard of the Audio Technica ATH-M50S? They any good?

ruari
Fair enough, I like them & have used them for years but it's ultimately down to how you feel about them. Good luck in making your decision, let us know which one's you go for in the end & what you think of them.
ruari
I've just found this article from Sound on Sound which might help you decide http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jan10/articles/studioheadphones.htm
ski
I just want a flat even frequency response... There is no such thing when it comes to headphones. It's probably not even a desirable characteristic. I just did a search online at the Shure and Beyer websites and frequency response graphs (or even tolerances like "+/- 3dB") aren't even listed for them. So flat frequency response, even if you could get it, can't be compared.
Eric Cardenas
+1 For the DT770's I find them responsive enough & comfortable over long periods of time. I'm also using the the Beyer DT770 and I absolutely love them.

el-bo
grado's are worth a trial....they are like headphone marmite, in that you either love them or hate them...specifically, some find them too uncomfortable...there are different pads available...i just love the sound.... the ones i have are not in this budget, but i've heard positive things about their cans, across the board http://www.gradolabs.com/frameset_main.htm you're more likely to find them in a hifi store...go, try them out i'm perfectly happy with my sr325i's, but one day.......... http://www.gradolabs.com/frameset_main.htm one day

I would not call them awesome. They are pretty clean and reproduce very well. In fact they reproduce better than the monitors I am using. I am still experimenting with the set up in this little room. I haven't listened to the other cans in the same price range, but I am happy with the K-702 headphones.
Barnelby
I picked up a pair of the sennheiser HD380 pros....the crisp, clear sound quality blew me away, but the bass was a little lacking for my taste. I took them back and traded them with the DT 770s and damn. They definitely came through in the low end, though the clarity isn't quite as sharp as the 380s. I am 100% happy with them, though; I travel with them ALL the time and can say that they are tanks. Interestingly enough, a while back the right side started to short out...I had to find a certain sweet spot in the cable for both sides to work which was REALLY annoying...I was planning on buying another pair but somehow after a few weeks they corrected themselves...there is no trace of a short or anything like that anymore....kinda creepy.... headphones that can heal themselves... I don't like the sound of that... (queue terminator 2 music)

Scotopia
I'm in the market for a good set of monitor headphones and this thread (and the linked ones) have been very helpful. Some time has gone since the thread started, however, so I'm curious if there are any new favorites to add to the mix. Personally I'd be looking for something that gives the most monitor-like output, as with my current situation I'll have to do some mixing at night. From the above it seems like the front runner for this is the Beyerdynamic DT 770; is that still the case? Thanks all!
