is there any way to set certain things on automation and not others? For instance I want to control the volume of my track by adjusting the knob on the mixer but when I have my track set to read mode because i added pan automation the only way I can figure out to adjust the volume is by adjusting the automation volume which is a hassle.

Yes, what you do not want to see automated, you'll have to delete existing automation from that track - in this case, Volume. Just delete all Volume automation, and you should be free to tweak it, without automation interfering. The Pan automation will keep working happily though.

Even when i have no volume automation written when i set my track to read mode it plays at the volume of 0db which the volume line is automatically set too even if I never write any volume automation myself. If i adjust it from 0Db on the mixing board andI click to play the song the volume knob automaticaly jumps back to Odb where it was before...

Having two nodes in the automation line will give you that behavior (even if they're at 0.0dB). To avoid what you're seeing, the automation line must be black (no nodes), or having just the initial node. You'll know you're good when the line moves when moving the fader.

If I go into preferences and then automation I can de select volume automation. but this screws me over for the tracks that i do want volume automation

Why would you need to do that unless the track you are working on has Volume Automation on it that you want to keep (in other words you want to bypass it temporarily)?

Are you just trying to figure out how to raise/lower the overall volume proportionately on a Volume Automated track?
