Using General MIDI Structure

Hi there, I need to compose some charts for MIDI 0 portable unit like cellphone. Id like to have access to a regular bank of General MIDI instruments to figure out what sounds like what. Is it possible in Logic to work on GM track directly with the proper program change sounds that we find in GM?

You can use load the Apple DLSMusicDevice on a software instrument channel strip by going to:

AU Instruments > Apple > DLSMusicDevice.

You could insert program change events right on the regions you sequence to change the sounds (I like using the event list for this). By default the DLSMusicDevice's sounds are drenched in reverb, to decrease the amount or turn it off, use controller 91 (event list or other editors).

Thanks a lot, I think not many people use this kind of features these days. If you know how to do that, maybe you can help me out with an important question Ive got. I need to export my midi tracks in standart Midi 0. To do so, I need to normalise these midi track and then merge them all together in one track because MIDI 0 dosent support multiple track. My question is: is it possible to use differents layers of voice assigned to different midi channel, so in just one MIDI 0 file I could play a complete song with drum, bass and piano? Or am I limited to only one channel total and need to apply program change really fast to use differents sounds?

And about the GM sound bank=>

Thank you much! I also found another way: in the environment window, select Midi instrument section, then create a new: "internal/Apple quicktime synth". Then you just need to connect a new multi instrument into it. Draggin each number of the multi instrument on the arrenge window will create new track assigned to this channel of this multi instrument.

Yes, that's the idea with type 0 files.

Make sure you do what's on the list under "Saving Standard MIDI Files" section in the manual, and then do this (from the manual):

To save a MIDI region in file format 0

Select the “‘Export MIDI File…’ saves single MIDI Regions as Format 0” checkbox in the

Project Handling tab of the General preference pane (Logic Pro > Preferences >General).

When this preference is turned on, choosing File > Export > Selection as MIDI File when

only one MIDI region is selected automatically exports the region as file format 0 MIDI

file.

Here's a pic of a type 0 file I exported from Logic. 4 channels, 4 different instruments, 1 MIDI file.....One Destiny?
