voxosonic Posted November 29, 2010 Share Posted November 29, 2010 I was performing live, in the middle of a song and all sound stops. I look over and the gray screen of death is scrolling slowly down the screen. I had used the MS set before without problems. I would like to hear from those that have experienced this and how often. Right now MS head is on the chopping block. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Jordi Torres Posted November 29, 2010 Share Posted November 29, 2010 Before you chop off Mainstage's head, why don't you take a peek inside /Library/Logs/PanicReporter to see what caused the kernel panic? (you can open the log with Console or Text Edit and paste the content here if you can't decipher it). The logs are saved with the date and time the panic occurred as the file name. J. Kent Sandvik Posted November 29, 2010 Share Posted November 29, 2010 Yep, especially if there's a driver involved. I assume/hope/pray you are not running OS in 64-bit mode. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
voxosonic Posted November 29, 2010 Author Share Posted November 29, 2010 Thanks for the reply jordito. I have a Crash Reporter (no Panic Reporter) in my Library folder but there isn't anything dated on the date of the crash for MainStage. Thanks Sandvik for your reply. How does one find out if one is running the OS in 64-bit mode? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

How does one find out if one is running the OS in 64-bit mode? You have to do some work to boot the OS into 64-bit mode, by default it is in 32-bit mode. I don't even know if you run SnowLeopard, anyway, it's a common mistake to think that you need to switch the OS to 32-bit mode for running apps in 64-bit mode. Means that some drivers crash really bad as they are not 64-bit compatible. Anyway, the panic trace should give more info. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

voxosonic Posted November 30, 2010 Author Share Posted November 30, 2010 In the "root" level Library there is a folder named "DiagnosticReports". In there I found "Kernel_2010-11-27-222851_etc,etc,etc.panic" that contains: Sat Nov 27 22:28:49 2010 panic(cpu 0 caller 0x2aab55): Kernel trap at 0x36f4ec98, type 14=page fault, registers: CR0: 0x8001003b, CR2: 0x00000000, CR3: 0x00100000, CR4: 0x00000660 EAX: 0x00000000, EBX: 0x077ca000, ECX: 0x00000000, EDX: 0x00000001 CR2: 0x00000000, EBP: 0x3669ab08, ESI: 0x077ec900, EDI: 0x077ca000 EFL: 0x00010202, EIP: 0x36f4ec98, CS: 0x00000008, DS: 0x072f0010 Error code: 0x00000000 Backtrace (CPU 0), Frame : Return Address (4 potential args on stack) 0x3669a878 : 0x21b50c (0x5d42fc 0x3669a8ac 0x223974 0x0) 0x3669a8c8 : 0x2aab55 (0x59616c 0x36f4ec98 0xe 0x596336) 0x3669a9a8 : 0x2a09a8 (0x3669a9c0 0x0 0x3669ab08 0x36f4ec98) 0x3669a9b8 : 0x36f4ec98 (0xe 0x48 0x36690010 0x290010) 0x3669ab08 : 0x36f506ed (0x77ca000 0x77ca498 0x20 0x75fe1f4) 0x3669ab28 : 0x565c15 (0x77ca000 0x3669ab90 0x8b771c 0x280) 0x3669abc8 : 0x5660b0 (0x36f57a50 0x77ca000 0x7783150 0x7872670) 0x3669ac18 : 0x5664e6 (0x77ca000 0x6 0x3669ac60 0x0) 0x3669ad38 : 0x2857a2 (0x77ca000 0x7783150 0x7872670 0x3) 0x3669bdf8 : 0x21d8ba (0x7872638 0x5b945a0 0x787263c 0x7783150) 0x3669be38 : 0x210a3a (0x7872600 0x3669be70 0x76b3770 0x7783070) 0x3669be98 : 0x216c9d (0x7872600 0x0 0x0 0x0) 0x3669bf18 : 0x294e13 (0x3669bf44 0x0 0x0 0x0) 0x3669bfc8 : 0x2a1018 (0x7357480 0x0 0x10 0x69b0520) Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies): com.caiaq.driver.NIUSBHardwareDriver(2.3.14)@0x36f44000->0x36f7afff dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOAudioFamily(1.7.9fc4)@0x1053000 dependency: com.apple.iokit.IOUSBFamily(4.1.7)@0x1284000 BSD process name corresponding to current thread: NIHardwareAgent Mac OS version: 10H574 Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 10.5.0: Fri Nov 5 23:20:39 PDT 2010; Jordi Torres Posted November 30, 2010 Share Posted November 30, 2010 Ok, looks like you already have the latest version. Some other audio kontrol 1 owners have also reported kernel panics: http://www.logicprohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=206963&sid=0ead4355a959e41c8c85628c19469142 J. Jordi Torres Posted November 30, 2010 Share Posted November 30, 2010 One more thing...Do you remember which USB port you used for the Audio Kontrol when you got the kernel panic? You should only use the right-hand USB port on a 15" MBP for USB-Audio interfaces, and other bus-powered devices (HD's). I've personally experienced problems with portable HD's not working properly when connected to the left-hand USB port. J. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
shaneblyth Posted November 30, 2010 Share Posted November 30, 2010 Just for others info mainstage is runing on my system and boots in 64bit mode and i have no crash issues live or otherwise I run fairly simple sets i use Kontakt with a large white grand piano sample set layered with Omnisphere and sometimes throw the MS organ in there in the layer too. i have been known to have a trillian split bass as well if the bass player is not available i use no other plugins and 64bit is fine Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was using the right side USB port on my 17" MBP. No other ports were in use. I will contact NI regarding compatibility with MS. Still the question for me is, "Is MS reliable enough to perform with?" Whether it is a kernel panic, application crash, or any other failure it is not worth the risk. Jordi Torres Posted November 30, 2010 Share Posted November 30, 2010 I will contact NI regarding compatibility with MS. A kernel panic caused by a device and/or its driver has nothing to do with the software you're using the device with, in this case Mainstage. It is a problem between the device, the OS, and the software elements that allow them to communicate. J. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It seems from the other posts in the Logic forum that NI Audio Kontrol has some Mac OS problems. I contact NI to ask them about it. I got the NI device because it has two stereo pairs out and is relatively inexpensive (I am using it for live performance only as I have an Apogee Rosetta in my studio). Would you have a suggestion for a device that would be compatible with four outputs? Thanks! Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
lohogan Posted December 9, 2010 Share Posted December 9, 2010 I'm using an Alesis io26, and it always works just fine. 8 good mic pres with inserts, 8 outputs, 2 headphones, midi, sounds great, runs on Firewire. The io26 is getting harder to find, but it is really good, compact, rugged, reliable. There's a similar box (rack mount shape) from presonus.
