First time hook up of Focusrite pro 24 in Logic Pro Studio 8

Recommended Posts

OK, received my interface today (Focusrite Pro 24), and have installed it (but not the Xcite disk) on my G5 (late 2005) Dual 2.0 Mac. I have Logic Pro Studio 8.02 installed on my computer. I have tried to wade through the manuals and make sure I have done this right but, I am sure I have made some error.

I have the Pro 24 connected to the computer via the Firewire 400 port on the rear of the tower (tried the front one, too). I connected, via midi in, on the Pro 24, my M-Audio Keystation 61es, created a new project, created a Software Instrument track, chose a piano, and Logic isn't seeing any signal. I then tried to just plug a guitar straight into the Pro 24 (channel 1), created an audio track and, the Pro 24 sees the signal, but Logic is still not seeing any signal.

I was foolish enough to think I could just install the Pro 24 and start recording but, I guess not. LOL

So, does anyone know what I have done wrong or not done? I bet it's something simple but, please keep in mind that I'm a musician, not a studio computer whiz, like most of you all are. Any help is greatly appreciated. :?

watched the support video from Focusrite on You Tube. That being said, the issue seems to be: Logic is not seeing the Saffire in the Preferences>Audio>Devices - drop down list. All I see, in the list is, Built In Audio, and Built In Audio 2. This tells me that Logic isn't seeing the unit at all. What next?

i went through this process a couple of weeks back...the version that came in my box was outdated, so i had to download the mix software from the website (contains the updated drivers)

there was also a firmware update to go through, but this might have just been for the 'dsp' model that i had

once you've one through the install, a restart should be all you need

I also get a "No Hardware Connected" message when I try to open the Mix Control. So, I'm off to the city to buy a new firewire cable today. It's only an 80 mile roundtrip... LOL

I will try the last suggestion, also...

Thanks gentlemen. I'll update very soon

I will give this machine no quarter... I will chase it to ground and gnaw on it's little skull

do the update first...the mix control and driver are tied together...it won't recognise the unit if the drivers aren't working

If the Pro 24 is the same as the 40 the first time you fire it up in the Saffire Mix Control you have to run thru the File>Load From Hardware then make a snapshot.

Every time you turn your computer on you have to reload that snapshot, in the link panel you should see Firewire Driver - Connected, Sync Status - Locked.

David, I did as you suggested first thing. I have contacted Focusrite and they are saying it may be the firewire bus on my Mac, although, they sent a form detailing some firewire issues and incompatibilities and, it clearly states that there are no known firewire issues with Mac. . I bought a new cable today, and now, the unit powers up from the firewire, instead of from the wall wart converter. HMMM

I will now try doing what the last responder suggested. Seems foolish to have to run through all of this, I'm burning time. Ahhh, well

Thanks again for the help - I'll be back

i had a whole weekend of nightmares with my 24 pro dsp.....including

- using without wallwart was impossible due to huge interference issues....but using it with meant that it wouldn't 'sleep' with my computer and when awaking the mac i ended up having to completely reboot for the thing to be recognised

- 3-5 random firewire connection dropouts (over the course of he weekend) resulting in reboots

- sound leaking out of monitors, even when volume was at zero (loud enough to listen to itunes comfortably at my desk

- issues with smoothness of a couple of rotary controls ~( 2 were really stiff to turn

that's before i got onto the over complicated-ness of the software

i did try with a couple of different firewire cables but the issues weren't solved for me

i ended up sending it back....

i hope it works out for you as, in the moments that it was working well, it sounded really good

el-bo,

I hear you loud and clear. Seems a lot of "chasing bugs" to get going with this unit.

I bought a new firewire cable (Planet Waves) and hooked it up. Now the unit powers up from the firewire connection, so at the least, the cable was bad because, before I had to use the wall wart. However, the unit still reads "No Hardware Connected". Now, I too, am wondering if I have a bad unit.

However, following David's lead, I looked in: About This Mac> More Info> Hardware> firewire, and under the Firewire Device Tree - Firewire bus it says

FireWire Bus:

Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec

Unknown Device:

Manufacturer: Unknown

Model: Unknown

Maximum Speed: Up to 400 Mb/sec

Connection Speed: Unknown

Seems to me (although I am surely no Mac whiz) the Mac should have the name, model, etc. of the firewire port(s) listed there. I am wondering, too, if this isn't turning into a tech question that should be on one of the other forum pages. Good grief, I just want to get started! Thanks to all of you for the help, suggestions, and, with certainty, your patience.

Triplets - I think you're on to something, there. I believe this unit is going back and being replaced. I will take your advice and look up the unit you mentioned and go from there... Film at 11 - LOL - Thanks again to each of you for your kind assistance. I'll be back with better news :!:

also, check out the apogee duet...it's more expensive (though less spec'd) but, according to the world and his aunt, has the edge in terms of sound quality

LMAO! David, You are just too much! I have an M-Audio Keystation 61 es and, after you mentioned that I looked... Of course it does - you kill me! If it wasn't for you and the rest of the Mac-Genies here, I might forget to breathe! I am going to try it out RIGHT NOW!

Merry Christmas to You And Yours, David - Thanks, Again - Jamie

P.S. WAHOO
