Arkadi
Hi was wondering if there was a way to disable midi layers while recording? I'd much prefer it to auto merge so I can keep everything in the piano roll at the same time as I compose. It is too distracting for the piano roll to go blank and start a new one everything I do another take. Thanks so much!!
David Nahmani
Not sure what a MIDI layer is.. but it's normal for the Piano Roll to go blank when recording. If you want you can re-select the MIDI region to display its notes, but the instant you'll play a new note, the old ones will disappear until you press stop. Arkadi
This was a simple function I was used to in Sonar. I mean - when I record over an existing midi track, Logic adds another layer to it. I understand why it does, in case you want to keep the previous midi layer undisturbed. If I want to merge them I click 'command M.' But was wondering if there was a way for Logic to do that automatically so I won't have to do command M? I don't need layers or takes. Perhaps my terminology is wrong - Should I be thinking regions? For instance, if I'm composing a piano line 10 measures long, I like to see it in the piano scroll window at the bottom. But if I want to add more to it, as soon as I start recording the piano scroll goes blank and starts a new take in the piano roll or score editor. This is frustrating. I can't see my previous performance anymore and have to guess when to come in, etc.. I just want to see everything at the same time all the time. No takes, layers or regions. For orchestral writing, this is my preference. Thanks!

What you can do is under Settings > Recording, set Overlapping Recordings to "Merge with Selected Regions". Then make sure the region is selected before you press record. You will still have the notes disappear from the display though, unfortunately.
Arkadi
Thanks for the tip. At least it all shows up in the score view after I stop recording. Maybe I'll send in a request to the developers for that feature I wanted though - would be handy.
