Reduce Individual Measure Sizes in Score Editor

Recommended Posts

is there a way to reduce the width of one measure in a staff line in order to widen another measure in the same line?

I am running into spacing issues when a single measure in a line has multiple chord changes while wanting to keep the same number of measure per staff line

-this is in Logic 7

thanks-

Several suggestions...

1) Reduce the size of chord text in the Text Styles Editor

2) Use plain text to enter chords when chord symbols will end up being crowded, and use the Size Tool to make them smaller or larger as needed

3) Similar to the above, create a new Text Style which has a smaller font size than standard chord symbols. Then, enter chord symbols using text in areas where the chords will be crowded, and apply your custom Text Style to those chords. Adjust the font size as needed, either in the Text Styles editor, or, using the Size Tool.

4) Use the Layout Tool (as Beer Moth suggested) to increase the distance between notes in problematic measures

Additional Suggestions:

5) Send a large donation to either myself or Beer Moth (or both) and we'll do the work for you. Eventually...

6) Don't write such complicated music. Fewer chords = fewer problems in the score editor

7) Try to change the values of Constant and Proportional Spacing (also Slash Spacing could be useful if you use beat slashes, instead of automatic rests, in your scores) in: Project Settings/Score/Global...

I'm sorry can't explain it better in english... but... it will be easy for you to read about Constant, Proportional and Slashes Spacing in the Score section of the manual...

Hope it helps...

Gribit,

I think you do very well with your English! I wish I could speak Italian to you, but I know only one phrase and it's not very "polite".

I would love to read your understanding of how the various proportional and constant spacing parameters work. For all these years they've confused me.

Gribit,

I would love to read your understanding of how the various proportional and constant spacing parameters work. For all these years they've confused me.

...I will do it.. but, sorry, don't expect too much...

The H.W. case is the right occasion to use that parameters! ...but not with understanding or knowledge... just trying untill we like the way it, the score, looks!

I've tried a lot of time to be rational with it... but as you've learned too, what we obtain at the end it's just... confusion!

Anyway, on the manual, the author has written very clear this idea:

"The settings you should use depend on both your personal preference, and the style of the piece. You should aim for a good balance between these two parameters, so try different combinations when working on the final score layout..."

...mmmmmm... I suspect he can't explain more then this... 8) ...and to me, the passage sounds like: "You've got to find the way by yourself, it could be too easy if I'll tell you everything about Logic! AH AH AH"

That's it! I hope to haven't wrote too much!

P.S.: ...but... YOU are the one that read, and understand, english very well... not me! :D D'you know? An italian version of the manual doesn't even exist!

Re. proportional and constant spacing parameters, I sometimes get the best results if I set constant spacing to zero (and definitely below 10) and proportional spacing really high. In the last piece I worked on I had it at over 100. (The default for both these parameters is 16 if I remember right.)

If you also set the stem length down from 7 to 6 and make ties/slurs a tad thicker, the score will look quite good.

Re. making certain bars wider or narrower, I agree with the suggestion about using the layout tool. It usually can't be used directly on the bar lines, but by using it single notes or groups of notes inside a bar, you have even more manual control than if you'd move the bar line itself.

(The only bar lines that the layout tool can be used on are the leftmost and rightmost bar line in each line - as a means to adjust the margin for that line independent of other lines.)
