right angle
I am seriously considering downgrading my Ensemble to a Duet, as I am now having to work out of a very cramped space (basically, a closet) and I don't need all of the I/O and preamps that the Ensemble has. It would be ideal if I could place the interface on my desktop and eliminate my small rack altogether. My big reservation about the Duet is that I really dislike the breakout cables—they look like a mess to work with, and don't seem particularly robust. I found out recently that there's a Duet breakout box being made, which is something I might be interested in using. If anyone has any opinions, positive or negative, about using the Duet's breakout cables and/or the Duet Breakout, I would love to hear them. Thanks! How is the breakout box going to solve the problem of the messy and non-robust cables?
jtees
I'll swap you my duet, for your ensemble Don't worry I used to think the same about the breakout cable before I bought the duet but it's actually not bad at all, actually I think I prefer it now, because I can plug my pre amps directly to the breakout cable eliminating the need for another mic cable. el-bo
the duet breakout box is hugely overpriced and ugly http://www.mercenary.com/tsound-duetbreakout-balanced.html i almost missed out on the duet because of the cable issue...but when i found out that a replacement would cost $25 i relaxed the connectors are really solid and weighty....the cables ??? well the breakout does come with an even more expensive 'balanced out' option, but it might not be necessary...depends on your needs, according to apogee http://www.audiomidi.com/assets/9798_ape_duet-qa.pdf
right angle
The Breakout Box attaches to the Duet via a single, large cable, and has the ins & outs mounted to it. Assuming the box is heavy enough, it seems like a sturdier mounting point for cables in addition to eliminating the spaghetti of the Duet's standard-issue wire bundle. I could be wrong, but it looks like a neater setup, and has balanced outs if you want them. http://www.duetbreakout.com/index.html

You're right, of course—it's pricey when compared to the total cost of the Duet itself. The stock cables don't sound like they've been all that problematic for people, so the breakout box may not be necessary for the time being. Thanks to everyone for the replies. JetLab
Why would anyone ever want to get rid of an Ensemble? I'll buy it from you.
