Unable to rename midi devices, prog/patch names (pro8)

First of all, system details: Snow Leopard (10.6.5), MacBook Pro 15" i7 w/ 4gb ram, running Logic Pro 8.

 

I am unable to rename midi devices or program/patch names, period. Sometimes trying to do so crashes Logic.

 

Am I doing it wrong? I create a new track, choose external MIDI, then double click in the inspector on the second window down where it says GM Device 3 (for example). Sometimes a new window pops up but immediately closes itself. If I click and hold, the new window will remain until I release the button, upon which it will immediately disappear. About half the time the window will come up and stay, but then Logic crashes.

 

What to do....
