Rearranging aux channels on mixer

Recommended Posts

I have some aux channels that I'm returning some fx & other things but they're intermixed with the audio & midi channels.

How can I move the order of them to group them together & in an order that makes sense to me??

Thx in advance

Maybe I'm missing something.

I am in the mixer window with arrange & the hand tool selected but when I click & drag on a channel (which in my mind would be the logical way to move it) it just adds other channels to the selection.

What am I doing wrong?

You can't move Aux's directly in the Mixer. You need to use the Mixer Layer in the Environment as stated in the link I provided.

Press Command 8 on your keyboard or Window>Environment to open the Environment. Once opened select the Mixer layer. See attachment.

OK, where can I find some documentation on this?

In the manual.

I'm just getting more confused than anything else at this point.

I don't know why you are confused. In the thread I linked above it gives you two options how to achieve what you are trying to do. It's spelled out pretty simply. Did you read through it?

Honestly I looked through the manual (http://documentation.apple.com/en/logicpro/usermanual/index.html#chapter=36%26section=0%26tasks=true) & in typical Apple fashion they tell you just enough to say they told you about it. Nothing in detail really as far as how to actually use it. But if I want to change the color of the cables, I'm all set!!

Reading through the post you mentioned again it seems that I have to customize the environment & use that as my mix window instead of the original one unless I want to add a bunch of bogus tracks in the arrange window. Is that about right?

It seems kinda crazy that something I can do in 5 seconds in ProTools takes jumping through a bunch of hoops in Logic.

Yes. If you choose to add the "bogus tracks" in the Arrange so that you can have the Mixer customized the way you want (instead of using the Environments Mixer Layer) you can always Hide the Aux tracks (in the Arrange window) after you create and arrange them.

No doubt, it seems pretty Logical to me that one should be able to drag the Aux channel strips in the Mixer to any location. Maybe we'll get this feature in a future upgrade. Until then, you know your choices.

This is an old thread but people seem to have this issue with Logic often. One could pre-create all 64 auxes and add them to your template. Use the first set of channels for Sub Groups (1-30), then Send FX (31-60), then the rest for headphone mixes or whatever else you need. Then additional auxes will be made for multioutput plugins automatically 65 upward. I keep SubGroups and SendFX in their own folders and in Arrange Mixer view I can just click and see them all. This keeps things a bit more organized for me. You can also use folders to create a mixer view you like and arrange things how you like them there, then when clicking on that folder or inside that folder you will see your mix in the order you like it. I find doing things this way makes it easier to find and keep track of things while mixing.
