I deleted unused Audio and the file size more than doubled??

highly illogical

Recommended Posts

I went into the audio bin and selected unused audio and deleted them. It appears that the audio files in the folder "Audio Files" have been multiplied into many duplicate files. and surprisingly the folder size has increased from 296MB to 1.25 GB. the opposite of what I was hoping for.

and now, even if I go back to an older "saved as" version of the project (with the original audio files still intact) and simply open it and do a "save as" it splits up the audio files and increases the size. it's as if it remembers that I deleted unused audio once and insists on doing it all the time. when I do a save-as I include all assets. so each version of the project has a separate folder with all the needed files.

I've tried restarting the computer -- same thing still happens.

What's going on? how do I fix this?

I went into the audio files folder and deleted all the duplicate files. When I opened the project, I got pop-up windows saying the files could not be found. I re-linked the files to the original audio files. I got the project back down to around 400MB

then when I did a save-as ----- it did it again. the audio folder is filled with duplicate files again and the project is around 800MB this time.

any idea of how to stop this from happening?

It's kind of hard to say why this is occurring without actually seeing your project or getting more details about your workflow, as well as what you're doing in your project. And it would help to see the file sizes too. So, some questions for you...

1) did you do anything like record some audio (e.g., drums), and then cut them up, separating individual instrument sounds, and then created new audio files from them?

2) corollary question... have you done any operations on any of these sounds where you used the "create new audio file" function to create multiple instances in your track?

3) let's take the cymbals. In your original you have one cymbal file, but in the other you have 10 duplicates plus the original. Are these files all the same size?

The original cymbal recording is one continuous file. I did rearrange some of the cymbal hits. But I would expect that they would all just link back to the original file.

I haven't created new audio files or bounced any tracks except for the one midi idrum track.

This problem only started when I opened the audio bin and selected all unused, and clicked to delete them and then i saved the file and bammo - it created duplicate files.

even when i go back to an earlier version of the project (which I didn't delete unused files) and do a new save-as, duplicate files are created.

I even went into the folder and dragged the duplicates to the trash and re-linked to the original files --- and then did a save-as and bammo -- duplicate files again.

Couple of things...

First, it's great that you included an image of the audio bin. What I see there are separate audio files. Just focusing on the cymbals in that screenshot, you have 10 discreet audio files, all of the same length. Note that I'm talking about the audio files themselves, not the regions that you are using from each one. So you have a situation where you're not referencing the original cymbal file (except for maybe one file). Instead, you have 10 cymbal regions which are all from discreet files of 32.8 MB each. Multiple 32.8 MB by 10 and that's the size of the cymbal audio in the aggregate.

What's kind of a mystery is why you ended up with 10 copies of your cymbal files. The only way I can think of is that you had the original file and then created 9 copies by using the "region-->audio file" command and afterward, you laid the all up in the arrange window and created regions for each one.

Project cleanup should solve this problem. I believe that it will take a look at each region and "extract" it from its parent file, trimming off the fat on either end, with the result being a much smaller aggregate size for all of your cymbals. The downside is that you will have no leeway in terms of expanding the left or right edges in case you need some air at the beginning or end of the file. Scott, correct me if I'm wrong about this.

Another way -- the hardcore way -- is to go into each cymbal region you see and do a TRIM function in the sample editor. This will physically change the length of each cymbal audio file to reflect the length of the region, with the result being a much smaller aggregate size for all of your cymbals. But if you were to go this old-skool route, make sure that each region truly only references one audio file.

One thing you can try is to create a new project and import the current project into the new project. See if this corrects it. May the project is corrupt?

Thank you! That seems to have fixed things. Thanks for all the fast replies!!

I'm having the exact same problem as you did, with Logic duplicating audio files and taking up so much memory. How did you go about creating a new project and importing your old one? Is there a simple way of doing this and does it save all the settings including automation?

Read this section of the manual.

If you have any questions after that. Come back here and ask.

Nice, thanks for that. It seems to have reduced the audio folder quite a lot. I had over 900 files in the the original and now it's just over 200. I'm just wondering, is there a way of preventing logic from duplicating the files in the first place? (it will put #1, #2, etc after the file name) or stop it from automatically saving an audio file in the folder when you drag it in there? This would help a great deal.
