Hardware needed for 5.1 mixing

Hi,

 

I have used google, and tried to find the search button here, but cannot, and still dont know what hardware I need to be able to mix in 5.1. And be able to hear what I am doing, rather than saving it, burning it, listening to it.

 

I know that the optical out wont do it, and that i need something else, for the life of me I cannot find what!

 

Will something as simple as a m-audio card let me output the separate channels?

I would like to connect the card to the amp via digital, but will do it via analogue cables for each channel if that is required.

Any audio interface with at least six outputs will do.

But wonder if there is product that doesn't have so many bits I dont need, and thus could save on having present.
