Frequency gate....

Hi, Im trying to isolate a bass drum on a stereo track that has the whole kit. I want to do this because with that signal I want to trigger some samples. So I thought if I am able to isolate the frequencies of the bass drum and signal them to another track to trigger the samples is my way forward. Any ideas if this is possible at all???

thanks

not sure what you're describing is exactly possible. don't think you'll be able to 'isolate' the bass drum if it's a stereo audio file. (but if your bass drum is actually midi then it's easy- just separate it using auxes)

what you could do though is play the same rhythm using another synth / virtual instrument and then use that as a send. (and turn the volume down completely so you don't hear a double bass drum sound)

note that you don't need to select another bass drum sample/vst instrument, you can use any plugin instrument. though it'd be best to use a one hit one. personally i'd use the klopfgeist.

You might be able to achieve workable results using the Spectral Gate, if the bass drum has a low and unique enough fundamental frequency.

Spectral Gate is a Filter type effect. Try these settings:

Threshold at minimum

Speed and both Modulation parameters at minimum/0

Center Frequency 60 Hz

Bandwidth 20-40 Hz

Low Level -100dB

Super Energy 0dB (or higher if necessary)

Sub Energy at minimum

High Level -100dB

Move the Center Frequency around, and narrow/widen the Bandwidth if necessary, to dial in the most kick with the least of everything else.

Again, it might not be able to do the job; but this is probably your best chance. Good luck.

Matt
