Mono/Stereo hardware compressors

Recommended Posts

I want to buy 2 compressors, one for predominantly running vocals through when tracking, and then to use when processing the vocals, and another to run over my drum group, and perhaps the mix bus.

My question is, if i get something like the UA LA 2A, i know that would be good for tracking vocals, as its a mono signal, but after i record vocals in mono, i pull them onto a stereo channel and start processing with stereo fx (reverb, delay, etc.) Can i then use the mono compressor after the tracking stage on this stereo channel? or would i need a stereo compressor?

Typically vocals stay on a mono track so they're processed (Pitch correction, EQ, De-essing, Compression...) in mono, then they are sent to a bus, using a "Send", and that bus reaches a Stereo Aux, which itself has a stereo delay or reverb etc...

Since your vocal recording is mono, it belongs on a mono channel strip anyway. You can add all your mono processing inserts first, and if you absolutely want to use a stereo effect on that track (and not on an Aux as I suggested), then you can just add them further down the channel strip. Not a problem.
