New Preamp Needed - Compatibility Question

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am using an M-Audio Fast Track pre-amp, which is plugged into my Mac via USB. The preamp has a 1/4" XLR connection for the mic it came with. I recently purchased a nicer Audio-Technica AT2035 microphone.

The new mic doesn't give me any signal on the old M-Audio preamp, and it appears that I need a phantom powered preamp to compensate for the mic.

Does anyone know if this preamp would work?

Someone in the comments said it is 41V and not 48V, which I suppose is not as good.

Any suggestions on a preamp in the $75-$200 range that would work with the AT2035 mic, and plug into my Mac, so I could record using Logic Pro 8?

Thanks!

The M-Audio Fast Track should have Phantom Power, check to make sure it is switched on?

hmm i get a green "signal" light with the old mic when i talk into it, but when i unplug the old cheap mic and plug in the nicer one the green signal light never lights up...

i found this on m-audio's "knowledge base" which is what led me to believe i needed a new preamp...

Q: My professional recording microphone doesn’t seem to be working with my FastTrack USB. Why won’t my microphone work with this device?

A: The Microphone inputs on the FastTrack USB are designed for passive/dynamic microphones only, they cannot provide the additional voltage needed for microphones that require phantom power of any kind, such as the common studio condenser microphone. If you are unsure whether or not your microphone requires phantom power, please check with the manufacturer.

the note under it states....

Note that the new Fast Track (with the knobs on top) does provide phantom power.

mine must be the older model - the knobs are on the front of it

In that case yes, you'll need a mic preamp with phantom power. The unit you listed will work, although I have to say I prefer triplet's idea of ditching your M-Audio Fast Track and getting a Presonus Audiobox instead.
