ryguy76
Hi, I'm on a mission to upgrade my '07 iMac to 10.6. So far, I've cloned my drive onto an external drive for peace of mind, as I am going to do an "erase and install" to clear my 4 year old machine from all glitches I currently suffer through. I also have a new MBP that I have setup with my current Logic rig (including all the plugs/programs I use). I'm wondering about what the best way would be for me to get around having to re-install all the plugs/programs that are currently setup on my MBP. It took awhile to get it setup, and I'm thinking that using "migration assistant" might work, but will it copy all the registration info and permissions etc? Has anyone tried this? Any other ideas? David Nahmani
I'm wondering about what the best way would be for me to get around having to re-install all the plugs/programs that are currently setup on my MBP. It took awhile to get it setup 1) The Best Way 2) The Fastest Way Pick only one. 1) Reinstall everything manually from the original install disks, upgrade everything to the latest known working/compatible version. 2) You can try migration assistant, some of your authorizations may not work: some manufacturers use hardware ID encoded in their authorization key. Keep in mind that could end up taking longer to setup, troubleshoot and maintain than #1) above.
analogika
I've migrated a number of times and never had any issues - some software is tied to hardware IDs and will require re-authorizing (such as Logic or the brainworx stuff), but it will generally let you know that and work fine once you do. What sucks is that authorization for some of the free plug-ins, such as the SPL Free Ranger or Attacker, was free only for a limited time, and only per-machine. So having migrated to a new machine, there is absolutely no way to re-activate those plug-ins short of buying them outright.
ryguy76
Well, of course I'm gonna have to lean towards "best" when given an ultimatum. I'm not opposed to doing it the long way, but I didn't want to find out after the fact that "migration assistant" would have done it in a fraction of the time. I'm not up for troubleshooting at the best of times when I want to record, so I guess I'll kiss an afternoon goodbye and do it the ol' fashioned way. Thanks for the advice, fellas.
