ben_allison
So I'm trying to build an instrument (hand claps). Let's say I have 6 samples, all the same velocity. Is there any way to have them randomize, in the esx (the way Drumagog or Superior can selects drum hits randomly)? If not, I can just add them in at different velocities, then randomize the velocities in my MIDI track... but that's a bit sloppy.
ski
Without adding some environment processes to the equation (which would create the randomizing function) there's no way to get EXS to randomly play samples. However, random is random, and so the idea you had of randomizing velocity is a good one. Why do you say it's "sloppy"? I can see only one downside to that approach... if you use velocity to randomize sample selection, anything else controlled by velocity will also be random (velocity--->filter, velocity--->volume, etc.) But hey, they're handclaps, so I'm not sure how much velocity control over volume or filter you'd need. There's another approach you can take in which you'd retain velocity control: instead of assigning different samples to different velocities, assign them to different MIDI channels in EXS. Then randomize the MIDI channel of the notes.
Rev. Juda Sleaze
Or, if it's just handclaps, assign each to its own note and do your own slightly-randomized round-robin through the keys, then you can assign velocity and perhaps subtle velocity/cutoff filtering to increase the "uniqueness" of the hits.
