dirtyfrank
I use Neumann TLM 102 mic and Apogee Duet soundcard with Logic 9.0.2 running on Mac OS X 10.6.6 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3. All worked ok for over a year, but recently I swapped this mic for a cheap one for half hour and started hearing crackling and the volume of the vocals was very low and couldn't adjust it. Now there is NO sound at all coming out of Neumann mic apart from crackling every 5-10 seconds. It's not the headphones as can play music etc on them, input mic on the mac works fine apart from getting loud feedback on mac's in-build speakers. Have checked all settings and have no idea what is wrong. Any suggestions???
David Nahmani
Have you tried raising the I/O buffer size in your audio preferences?

David Nahmani
In Logic, click the Preferences button in your toolbar, choose "Audio", find the "I/O Buffer Size" menu and set it to a higher value. Close the window to apply your changes.

David Nahmani
Can you go to Preferences > Audio and set the input device to be your internal built-in mic, and try to record using your MacBook's built-in mic to see if that works ok?

Yes it works, one more thing - I just tried to record with neumann mic as well and it recorded the crackling only and still no voice can be heard or recorded

David Nahmani
Hmmm ok at this point I would try and contact Apogee tech support, see if they can help, or see if you could borrow another interface from a friend and try recording with your mic on your computer with their interface to make sure it's really the Duet. But right now, unless both mics are messed up, all fingers point toward the Duet.

mattrixx
Could it be an issue with the DUETs phantom power? I had a DUET for a few years (just changed it out for a Babyface) and it would not power some microphones adequately, resulting in a distorted hashy sound. Just a thought. The thing is it worked perfectly for 1 year and 3 months it's only been playing up for a few weeks could hear crackling then connected the cheap mic and it got 95% worse when I tried neumann mic again, now the whole sound is gone even the crackling but when i connect the cheap mic to the same thing there is hashy sound and crackling but i can sort of hear my voice when i speak to it
mattrixx
With reference to your audio description, it's sounds very much like the situation I had. Are both channels exhibiting identical behaviour?
dirtyfrank
With reference to your audio description, it's sounds very much like the situation I had. Are both channels exhibiting identical behaviour? Yes i get the same thing from both channels. I tried the mic and it's cable in a different studio both worked perfectly after turning on phantom power, so now i know it's the apogee duet playing up and not the mic. I still didn't work out how to turn phantom power back on on duet. I think it turned off when I connected a different mic, I think Neumann mics need phantom power but some other mics don't, I will be contacting apogee if can't sort it out myself. If you go on their website you can contact an expert after registering the kit.
triplets
Condenser microphones need phantom power. That can be any brand, not only Neumann. Dynamic and ribbon microphones don't need phantom power.
scrofani
I haven't used my Duet in a while but isn't there a +48volt button to click in the Maestro GUI to turn the phantom power on and off? Definitely the TLM102 needs the 48 volts. If you had the phantom power on with the TLM engaged and then pulled the mic off the cable (never a good idea by the way to disconnect and connect condensers with phantom engaged) and then connected a dynamic mic that didn't require the 48 volts, I don't know what the Duet would do. But if it automatically turned off the 48 volts (not sure how it would detect that situation) then, yeah, you would need to turn it on again. In theory it's possible to ruin your dynamic mic this way although I've never seen it happen - by the way.
