Mackie Onyx 820i + M-Audio BX8a?

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I'm in the market for a mixer/audio-interface and studio monitors. I am considering Mackie Onyx 820i and M-Audio BX8a Deluxe monitors. If any of you that have used these could share your experiences, recommend them or recommend something else instead I'd be very grateful!

Could you give us some more information about how you will be using it? As David says, you may not actually need a mixer and could get more benefit from a straight up audio interface.

How many inputs do you need? Do you need multiple outputs? What are you planning on recording with it?

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I would like a mixer, but it's possible I don't need one immediately. I make soundtracks for indie games so most of my music is made with software. However I also have a band and record vocals and guitar with a zoom h4 as an audio interface for now. I'm more interested in doing this so I want to expand my home studio (which is mostly just computers and midi controllers as of now). We won't be recording many things at once but I'd like the option to do more things in the future. I'd also like something we can use for practicing and possibly performing live. I want to be able to control how things sound in real time more. The Korg Kaoss Pad Quad really interests me too.

@david Thanks for your advice. KRK Rockit 8s seem like they'd sound good but they're kind of ugly. I wonder why a lot of monitors have bright yellow in them. I'd prefer neutral looking ones.

@organsymphony If I don't get a mixer I was considering the firestudio mobile which you appear to have, but it's only $100 cheaper than the 820i on amazon. Is it any better in terms of recording quality than the 820i would you say?

I have no experience with the 820i so I couldn't give you a direct comparison.

I am however really happy with the quality of the presonus gear I own. It sounds great and is really stable. Not to mention the amount of inputs on the firestudio mobile is pretty awesome for a unit of that size. 2 mic/instrument inputs, 6 line inputs, stereo spdif I/O and midi I/O.

But if you want a mixer to double up to use live with your band then the 820i could be a good option. It could be a bit above your price range if you're looking around the price point of the 820i but Presonus recently unveiled a new smaller mixer in their Studiolive range which looks pretty awesome and suits your requirements really well.

I'm not trying to pimp out presonus here, I just have a fair bit of experience with their products. Unfortunately I can't really give you any comparisons as the only other interface I use is the motu 24 i/o at work. But thats not really what you're looking for at all.
