bt12
currently I'm monitoring on Event ALP 5" monitors, and I love them, but to really hear the bass I have to throw on my sony headphones, MDR7506. That is a bit of a hassel. Since my budget doesn't include being able to spend 400 - 500 on a nice sub, I was thinking of just investing in a set of inexpensive computer speakers with a sub. This would give me a second set of speakers to check the mix on and the ability to hear the mix with a sub. I am creating very bass oriented electronic music. Any advice on this type of set up? Why to or not to go forward with this idea? Experience? Thanks
druu
My advice would be to sell your 5's and get some full range monitors. I was in the same boat, referenced with headphones for low end etc. then ended up buying a sub to match my monitors - without proper room treatment and hours of tuning/measuring, a sub will just cause you grief. I eventually sold my smaller monitors and bought some Yamaha HS80's and won't look back.
shivermetimbers
Hear me out. Get a cheap set of earbuds that have a low frequency range (down to 10 or 20hz) and slap a set of these ear gels on them. You will hear the lows. No chest thumping, but they work. http://www.instructables.com/id/Improve-In-Ear-Headphones-Ear-Buds/step3/Get-some-Jabra-Ear-Gels/ As druu said, The Sub will sound great, but it isn't worth the grief (at least in small rooms). druu
I forgot to mention that I did spend countless hours trying to tune the sub setup in my treated room but proved very difficult, even a matched system, the cutoff point was impossible to flatten out. Installed the HS80's, took some measurements and found it was already as flat as I wanted but with low end very audible. Here is my last measurement with the 2.1 setup (light blue plot). Here is the first measurement I took after unboxing the HS80's. I managed to get the response even flatter since (including that 200hz null) but haven't got any graphs to show. Huge difference for mixing though!
bt12
oh wow, that's an incredible difference. Thanks for the heads up. I have such a bond w/ the ALPs that I never thought of selling them but that might be the best option. Thanks!
druu
Keep in mind the plots have different smoothing (I have some of the same smoothing somewhere) but the low end boom is very noticeable with the sub. But yes, subs are a headache to tune!
