Motu 8pre with microkorg xl

Recommended Posts

Hello,

Just got myself an Motu 8pre and i've ran into some problems.

Basically, i want my microkorg to record into Logic 8 with midi but using the microkorg sounds.

I have the midi in/out attached to my Motu.

I've looked in the manual and followed the midi page setup instructions but i feel way over my head when it comes to midi.

Do i need to attach the usb to my computer as well??

My eyes are crossed from looking at forums/manuals :S

Does anyone have a similar setup to mine?

I don't exactly feel confident that i've set it up correctly so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Also, as a side issue, i also have a Alesis 3630 compressor that id like to use with the motu. Is this possible? eeeeeek! need some coffee :)

Cheers guys

Impossible. MIDI is data, not audio. You can connect MIDI if you also want to use it as a controller, otherwise you have to connect audio cables to get sound from the Microkorg into Logic.

ahh yes..but, i have two tracks enabled in logic. One is recording the sound from the microkorg and the other is recording the midi notes as i hit them. Is there no way of merging the two.

Can you not edit the midi notes/sound/automation ect you have played?

thanks

I'm failing to see why you would want to merge the two. If you want to edit MIDI, you can do so in the piano roll/score/event list, as with anything else MIDI. If you want to (mostly destructively) edit audio, you do so in the sample editor, as with most anything else audio. Of course, you can also always add plug-ins to affect the sound on either type of track as well. But ultimately, they're apples and oranges.

If your aim is just to be able to edit your stuff from your Microkorg, the solution is to create an external midi track sending the MIDI data back to the Microkorg, then actually recording to an (different) audio track. This way you can change the MIDI data as you like, then reprint as necessary.

Hi thanks for getting back to me. All i want to do is play and edit the sounds from my Korg. I understand midi is different from audio. For example; I find a sound i like on the korg and i want to record and edit that take within Logic. Is that not something everyone wants to do? i couldnt edit an audio track very well but drawing in notes ect on a midi channel is what id want.

Any help with the specifics of seting up my system (including the alesis 3630) would be amazing.

thanks

Can't give you details for Logic 8, as I've never used it, but the concept is like I said (though I think there are also a couple other ways to go about it):

drawing in notes ect on a midi channel is what id want.

So then you want to record MIDI, not audio.

Use an external MIDI track, assign it to the MicroKorg in the Library. That's your MicroKorg MIDI track.

You can have an audio track set up to record the MicroKorg, and click its "I" button (Input Monitoring) so that the audio of the MicroKorg is mixed with your other tracks, and reaches your speakers.

But there's no need to record the audio, especially since you say you want to edit the MIDI track, and every time you do so the audio from the MicroKorg will be different, and you'd have to delete the previous recording and make a new one. So just don't record the audio, but click the "I" button.

Once your project is completed and you have done all your bounces, sent your master to be duplicated or uploaded your mp3s to your site etc... and you're really done with the project, THEN I would recommend you record the MicroKorg as audio, for archival reasons (who knows when someone will ask you for an instrumental mix or a remix or whatnot, and who knows where your MicroKorg will be then).

But during production, to take advantage of the flexibility of MIDI editing in Logic, do not record the MicroKorg's audio.

Hope that helps?

You cannot merge audio and midi.

Though I would answer this question with the exact same words, it should be possible somehow, as green Apple loops are just that: one file containing MIDI and Audio. But afaik you can't create those with Logic or the ALU... so how did they make those...?

Having said that, those green loops cannot play both the audio and the MIDI simultaneously, it is MIDI (on an SI/ExtMIDI track) OR audio (on an audio track).

Thank you thank you thank you. Yes this helps allot. And thanks for your advice re recording it again with audio. Good idea.

I have followed your advice and not recorded the audio track, just the midi. This is all running smooth but it has presented me with a new problem.

I would like to use more then one sound from my KORG within my project and im not sure how i would achieve this. I've looked into the midi routing page on my KORG but i don't think i'm doing it right. Would you have any advice for me regarding that? For example -piano on channal 1, bass on channel 2 etc.

Many thanks again for the previous advice.

Chris

actually, i may have found a way around it. Ive recorded the track to midi. Got it the way i want with effects, corrections etc and then press play and record it onto the audio track. This seems to have worked. Whether i'm getting ahead of myself and this will encourage more problems though????
