Any problems with upgrading memory?

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

I am in the process of getting a new imac (3.4 GHz i7 Quad Core) and was hoping to find out a couple of things.

The general concensus seems to be that 8GB will be sufficient but was wondering wether just to go for the maximum 16GB or maybe 12GB. Are there any issues with what size memory I put in there or is it just get what you can afford?

Also I don't really want to pay Apple's over the top prices so want to get the standard 4GB and upgrade myself. Again are there any issues with what brand to use? I've used 'Crucial Memory' on my current imac and have had no problems.

I've already posted a similar thing on the Apple Support site but wanted to get a view from dedicated Logic users as this is what I will be using the imac for mainly. Logic and FCE.

Thanks people!!!!!!!

Get basic 4 gigs from Apple and upgrade later.

I got the basic 4 gigs (2-2GB), and then bought two 4 GB to fill up the additional slots. It may be more then I need, but I like the idea of having the two 4 GB modules, then if I needed to go higher, I'd just need two more 4 GBs, or larger. Otherwise, with a total of 8 gigs, you'll end up with 4 2GB modules... but most here do recommend that 8 GB is sufficient, adding two 2 GB modules should be pretty cheap through the vendors (I think I used Crucial Memory)
