Does any one use 2 screens out there? Advice needed!

Recommended Posts

Hello, just wondering if there are any users that are using 2 screens for Logic. What are the advantages, how does it work, is it worth the outlay. Also can you recommend one that's not too expensive. I'm shelling out on a new imac and running out of cash.

Thanks.

I'm currently using the Apple 30" in the center, and a 23" off to one side (directly above a control surface). I keep the Arrange window on the main monitor, and the "virtual display" for the control surface, MOTU audio interface control panel, UAD meter applet, an Environment window (I like the Environment mixer view better than the dumbed-down "mixer" window), and any plugin windows I want to keep open (particularly metering and any master buss plugs) over on the "side" second monitor.

IMHO, get Apple branded displays, and get 'em used on Craigslist. My 30" was found for only $500 on Craigslist (although it involved a three hour drive to go pick it up).

I use a 15" MacBook Pro and an 23" external monitor.

The MacBook sits on my Desk, and the 23" monitor sits right above it. So the screens are stacked vertically instead of the usual horizontal spread that you usually associate with a two monitor setup.

Most of the time, I have my Arrange window on the 23" (top) and the Mixer is in the MBP screen (bottom). But now and then I'll just put all my currently used plugins on the MBP screen, or whatever i'm currently using other than the Arrange window. Plugins like Superior Drummer, or Amp Designer are relatively big, and it's nice to have them living on their own screen and not covering my Arrange window.

It's funny, because I personally don't really LIKE dual screens. I hate moving my eyes up and down or side to side in a horizontal setup. I like simple.

But it really adds a lot to convenience, workflow, etc. The one thing I hate more than moving my eyes around is constantly managing which windows/views are in front of other ones, and bouncing back and forth.

Interesting, thanks for your views. I think it's definitley the way to go for me. I love the idea of having plugins on a separate screen and not having different windows open on the same one.

I would love an Apple display but fear they may still be a little pricey. So any recommendations on other brands. Also looking forward to using 2 screens for FCE, having the viewer on separate screen will be a huge bonus.

used to use 2 monitors, but found it a pain in the arse...so relieved when i finally went back to one screen, with everything right in front of me

it's no effort to make screensets, and to use the 'v' key to hide plugins

It depends on what I am doing. For sketching or exploring "stuff" I prefer one screen.

For editing and mixing, I like the real estate.

I'm with El-bo on this one regarding screen sets. I have never lost my love for them. I wouldn't skip a beat in my workflow if I had one screen and used screen sets.
