Keeping Movie on Top - Still Problem - 9.1.4

To your second thing, the vanishing movie thing is the brainchild of the people who coded Logic 9. Switching to any other app makes the movie window disappear. This wasn't a problem with Logic 8 or previous. Grrrr.... Anyway, I don't believe there's much you can do about that.

I think that was the problem at some Logic version. In Logic 9.1.4 the video window is a regular window, meaning when switching to a different app, it is still visible (if not covered by another window).

The disappering thing is a characteristic of a Panel or Palette which is special kind of window that usually has only the "Close" button active while the "Hide" and "Resize" button in the left upper corner of the window are grayed out. Thoses windows (Preferences, Project Setup, CPU, etc) will disappear when switching to a different app. All that stuff is explained in detail in the "OSX HI Guidleines" by Apple, but there are more and more exceptions (violations) by third party dev and sometimes even Apple itself (i.e. its own Logic dev team). That's the part were I agree with Ski's "Grrrr...."

A (poor) workaround would be to make the tiny video box visible at the top of the Arrange Window inspector. That way it is included with the Arrange window which definitely stays visible.

In the first part of your question, what do you mean with "in position on all screensets"?

If you want to have the Video Window "independent" from switching between screensets, that is not possible because the Video is part of your window arrangement that you store in your screensets and I don't think that you can exclude any window from it.

THanks guys.

9.1.4 - can't make it right now, in the midst of a project. But that is great to know the "always" on top thing is fixed.

Second thing (first actually) - I don't understand why the movie isn't the same for all screensets. Seems kind of strange that there is no way to lock it to be so, I guess I could do it manually though.

If you don't understand "why the movie isn't the same for all screensets", let me try to explain:

First of all, a feature that could be a great improvement for some could be a major nuisance for others. What if I created some screensets where I explicitly don't need/want the movie window. I would be irritated the same as you are just for the opposite reason

However, take your suggestion one step further and you have an excellent point: How about a feature that lets you mark any window (not only video) to be excluded from the screenset.

You can always go to Logic's feedback page and make a feature suggestion.

I just double checked it and yes in Logic 9.1.3 the video window will disappear when switching to a different app where in Logic 9.1.4 it stays visible.

I can't remember that that (important) change was listed in the 9.1.4 release notes?

That's the thing I can't understand. When Apple comes out with a new upgrade isn't there an internal database of all the changes and improvements they were working on and is it too much to asked that they tell an intern to just copy-paste the list and publish it as a (COMPLETE) release note. Throwing it just out and let the user stumble over it is kind of a strange (disrespectful) approach. After all those are not easter eggs

But if the Logic dev team is into this kind of game, why not implement a system where you can unlock new features when you discover those hidden feature. I would like "Export Audio to Movie in 64bit" as my price please, how do I unlock that in 9.1.4t?

It's probably a bug...in our favor

Edgar,

Your post has me right on the edge of going off on a full-fledged rant. But I'll refrain and just say "don't get me started!" And no, I don't feel any better for not going off on one. But... should I? Someone would say "prolly".

Thanks for sharing the news (or, as Jordito put it, bug? ).

Yep, Jordito is right, it must be a bug. That explains it why it was not listed under "improvements". But it also means that it will be "fixed" in 9.1.5 and revert to the 9.1.3 functionality.

Ski, before you go off on your well deserved rant, please take your iMeds that Dr Steve (or Dr Lengeling) prescribed. It is available at the App Store for free, but refills require in-app purchases.
