Laptop into amp?

Recommended Posts

I'm about ready to move past my metal/hardcore days for good as a guitarist (or at least get something more versatile than my Peavey 6505), and was strongly considering getting an Orange Rockerverb 50 combo. Then I was playing around a bit with mainstage the other day, and had a thought.

Guitar --> interface ---> laptop (with MIDI keyboard as well) ---> keyboard amp

I figure I could spend half the money I would on the Orange on the keyboard amp, and then spend the other half on a laptop to replicate my desktop setup, and then basically be able to do anything live without having to have two amps, or have the amp and a line in, etc. etc. etc. What do you guys think?

If you've got a load of settings on the logic/mainstage amp designer that you really love then it's a great solution to take it live with 100% faithful reproduction of your logic tones. Having said that, a macbook is a hell of a spend just to be an effects/modelling unit IMO, think of the guitar rig (amp plus effects/modelling) you could get for the same money! If, though, you're looking to bring some beats/backing track/keys/vocal effects to your live performances, i can vouch that it is awesome!

As I'm now almost exclusively the synth player/dj role in my band, I had to computerise to get the best bang for buck both for live and studio sessions, and whilst it is great, I definitely prefer hardware for gigs if given the choice, especially for guitar.

Just my 2c of personal pref, but the concept should work great. Plus as a bonus your interface will output a line level signal meaning you could feed straight into the PA at gigs thus enabling you to leave the kb amp at home!

Exactly, it's wanting all the loops and keyboard sounds available live that's making me want to do this. I'd definitely stick with just a guitar amp if that's all I was doing, but I've got a lot more stuff I want to use now, mostly midi keyboard controlled. I thought it'd be cool to run PureData live as well.

The PA is a good point though! Most places I've played thus far have one, so maybe at this point it's a little bit of a waste and I'd be better just plugging everything into the house setup. Or getting a PA instead of a keyboard amp, like one of those Yamaha all-in-one kind of deals or a Fender Passport. Hmmmm.
