Here's what happens when you let an old hippy loose w LOGIC!

I didn't have any difficulty viewing the YouTube link. I can tell you worked very hard on this...from the music to the video production. The mix and balance is top-notch. Kudos!

The only criticism I have is on me...since your groove is not really my thing. But I wanted to add that I was really intrigued by your intro, thinking that you were headed towards some sort of Alan Parsons Project kind of thing. I wish your song had gone more in this direction, and found the quaint, folksy groove a bit of a disappointment. But again, that's on me!

Awesome job!

Thanks for the comments dudes! As you can probably tell, I wasn't taking myself too seriously! This is an old band song that I revamped for the sole purpose of trying to learn how to use Logic (it's the second thing I've recorded since switching from a porta-studio to a Mac set up).

The song itself was originally recorded with my old band as a wah-wah guitar-driven funk thang but, although this new version still retains a bit of the original's groove, my musical tastes have progressed somewhat and I suppose that's where the extra textures in the song come from. (Originally this guitar was just: wah-wah'd electric guitar; Fender Jazz bass; one vocal and bongos!) Re: The outro - I was just noodling about really, it was all ad-libbed. I have never heard of The Alan Parson Project but I'll check 'em out.

The next stuff I attempt with Logic will probably sound quite a bit different to this. Again, I appreciate all the comments folks - they're a great help!

This site ROCKS!!!!!

PS: Technical admission: The trombone in the video is a prop. I can't play trombone and had to MIDI fake it - shame!

Oops! Sorry Bruce, just read your post and it's the INTRO you liked. As mentioned, the OUTRO was just an ad-libbed 'noodle' but the INTRO is the song's main chord progression played with a MIDI keyboard controller using a nice-sounding, 'spacey', arpeggiated pad. If I get the time I might revist this (again!) and do the ambient mix based around the intro 'feel'. Thanks for the insight.

APP was never known for great lyric-writing skills, although they had a number of popular songs...some a bit cheesy IMO. (YouTube has tons of 'em.) What they did do, and fabulously well, was create tremendous soundscapes and wonderfully intricate compositions. "I Robot" was their best, and put them on the map:

Maybe you're one of those new, old hippies?

You're way too young to be an old hippie. Sorry about that!

Are you sure? I certainly feel like one. OK, how about a guess my age competition? Entries on a postcard to the: 'When is a person too young to be classed as an old hippy Competition?' stating guesstimate age. Answer will be revealed in the next few days and the winner will receive a prize!

well, I liked the groove- nice bass sound too- I'd be interested to learn how you recorded/mixed the bass-

There really wasn't much to do to the bass sound at all. It's pretty much 'au naturel' and just down to the instrument itself (well, perhaps a little to do with the playing but not much!) The bass is the actual bass you see me playing in the vid - a FAB old Hofner dating from c.1964 if I remember rightly. I use flatwound strings on it and it gives it that nice, FAT, pumping tone. Probably not to everyone's taste I'm sure but it sounds kinda cool to my ears. It took me a long time to find a bass guitar that would give me this type of sound and 'feel'! At last I am happy with my sound (in the lower registers at least!)
