monstar187
Hi, I'm trying figure out if it's possible to use my Roland drum kit to notate beats and grooves I'm playing in Logic. I've read several forums about it and I'm seeing if anyone has had success doing this. Thanks in advance for any advice or help. Regards, Brian
David Nahmani
Hi Brian, Yes, it's possible, you just connect your drumkit through MIDI (or USB if it has a USB connection) to your computer. In Logic you create a software instrument track and load a drum channel strip setting. Press record and start playing the drums, you will see the notation displayed in the Score editor (there will be a few adjustments to make in order for the staff to display drum notation but it's very easy. monstar187
hi, thanks for the reply. i'm actually to the point where it's notating what is coming in midi from the drumkit. the problem is i can't figure out how to change how it is notated to reflect drums (like positioning on the staff, etc). is there any detailed advice as to how to transform it into drum notation? i'm new to logic and still trying to learn my way around. thanks for your help! brian
Audiogrocery
the problem is i can't figure out how to change how it is notated to reflect drums (like positioning on the staff, etc). It is quite complicated to see what you exactly want, but for sure it will be very helpful if you refer to the Logic manual and search/read about the Environment "Mapped Instrument" object which is very versatile for such scenarios you are talking about, or to read about the Hyper Editor (Hyper Sets) which are also very conformable etc. A.G
Doug Z
If you want to create a drum part (with standard drum notation) you need to assign your staff style to #Drums - the last one on the list. This in done in the inspector in the score editor. This default may work for you. If you need to modify it there are a few more steps involved. Post back and I or someone else can help you. Basic steps involve creating a Mapped Instrument and map accordingly. You'd need to assign this instrument to a track, place your drum recording on that track. You can also edit parameters in the staff style window. You will need to use the #Drums staff style - feel free to duplicate and edit accordingly
