import midi file into better default template

When I open a SMF w tempo map opens a large template i don't want... how do I change the template to something simple?

I don't think there's a way to change that, except opening while holding down option, which will create external MIDI tracks instead of loading EXS instruments in software instrument tracks. This way it will open your file super fast.

 

Another trick, if you have Logic 9:

 

Make a copy of your SMF and change the file extension of the copy to ".lso" (that's an "L" not an "i").

Create a new project and use Logic 9's selective track import feature to import anything you want from that SMF.

 

Funny it doesn't work if you change the SMF's extension to ".logic".
