Sidechain setting resets on its own

Hello LPH,

I've been using the Logic Stereo Compressor for some time now, and have always experienced this issue, where the sidechain setting would reset after performing certain actions. Now, I can't put my finger directly on what those actions are (probably not one specific action that's causing this), but I've had this happen many times, on various tracks from different projects.

For example; I would set up a sidechain from Bus 1 on a compressor that's inserted on a track, and the compressor will perform as intended, and then after a couple of days, several arrangements (actions include adding more tracks and adding compressors on those tracks that are sidechained to the same source, arrangement undo's, etc...) and playthroughs, I will notice something is missing and opening that compressor will reveal that its sidechain settings have been reset to 'None', without me actually doing anything.

Been trying to Google this to no avail, and have worked around this for some time now. But I reckon it's time to settle the score!

Has anyone ever experienced, and perhaps know what's causing this?

Did you get low memory warnings?

Never right before a sidechain setting reset. I know this because over the course of 4 months, I've received 3, maybe 4 system overload outputs, and A LOT of sidechain setting resets.

I think that what nosebagger suggested as the trigger for this bug sounds very likely.

@nosebagger do you reckon that when undoing a plugin insertion or copying/moving, all sidechain settings for all plugins on the specific channel strip that has been fiddled with are reset?

I think all sidechains in the entire project are reset, regardless of which channel strip the undo is performed on.

Also, I think my first post was a bit ambiguous, inserting/copying/moving plug-ins doesn't cause the problem, it's the undoing of such operations that does.

Like I said, I haven't tested this, but this is what seemed to be happening during a mix I did last week. I've avoided undoing channel strip actions since and had no problems.

Hmm.. I don't remember getting a project-wide sidechain settings reset, but then again, I might have. Nevertheless, these relate to each other...

Who's gonna step up and give us absolution? (preferably in the form of "untick this")

Also experienced this is Logic Express 9 & Logic Pro 9....both are updated to the latest (32-bit) versions.

So awful when it happens! (and really annoying) In a project, I created 3 bassline tracks that are part of a group, and a main bassline track. Each of the 3 bassline tracks are sidechained with:

-kick

-1 or 2 of the other basslines

-one is sidechained with the main bassline

So for instance one bassline is sent to bus 7 (random bus choice), the main bassline is sent to bus 47 (random bus choice), another might be sent to bus 3. The reason why it's sorta complicated like this is because:

-together everything sounds cool

-frequency interference is reduced a lot between bass tracks

-all are sidechained with the kick for the "trance/house/progressive" sound

-------

It suuucks when all the sidechain routings randomly reset because it's easy to forget what was sent and sidechained with what....maybe 20-25 routings are all gone. AH! I hope this can be fixed by Apple as soon as possible. Just really hard to even work on a project not knowing when all sidechain routings could be reset to "none", and what causes that, and why....and whether to make another project. idk.

@rpg2288

One mystery I can solve for you is - making a new project won't solve this!

Heh, sorry :)

The thing that really wow's me is how little the attention that this issue gets. There are no mentions of this online, anywhere. (Atleast none that I could find.)

From this thread, it's clear that almost everyone is suffering from this (Express 9, Pro 9 and its subversions, 32 and 64 bit).

So, what's up?! Are people actually comfortable being lazy with posting about it and just prefer to re-set their sidechains? Or, do people not use sidechains?

One thing's for sure, if people don't whine, sh*t don't get fixed, yo! just sayin'...

lol, the problem has been going on for a while....at first I thought it might be caused by moving a logic express project to a studio one. It wasn't terrible then because I only had 10-15 sidechain bus routings set. Now it's 20-25.......uhh

  • 3 weeks later...

any solution/work around found? :/

...does anyone see this happen in a *new* project (containing no plugins/settings/midi/edited audio files/etc. imported from other projects)? It's been happening in both express 9 & studio 9 (latest versions) for me....but maybe the error is related to importing the above things from other projects? (which may have contained errors)
