Using Logic9 to automate MainStage2

A wile ago I saw a video on YT that spoke very loosely on using Logic9 to send midi messages to MS2 for automating changes( enabling and disabling effects). I'd love to

Use this, but can't find any info. I also have a Q:

1- If I change a patch in MS, must I also change the Logic project to pull up the

appropriate set of messages?

2- Should I just ditch MS and use Logic live?

Any help will be highly valued

Why do you run Logic?

My first thought is: you probably need to use the IAC bus for this.

As for both your questions, I do not understand what you mean, as I have no clairvoyance going on that spots your personal workflow in Logic and/or Mainstage. :?

If Logic sends a messages to select, say, patch 76, then that message will still select patch 76 if you make any changes to that patch. But if you save it as patch 77 and wish to use that instead of 76 from then on, yes, then you would have to change to Logic project too. But I can't imagine you haven't thought of this yourself, so I am at a loss as to what it is you're asking. Could you explain your workflow with a bit more detail?

Erik: the first reply was not clear, hance the request for elaboration.

Now to meat & potatoes. What I want logic to do is to turn effects on and off on a patch by patch basis. For example: In patch1, turn on a vocal delay for verse, then turn it off and turn on a fuzz for guitar during the chorus. And so on for all patches.

I use one patch per song with backing tracks, so I would be using a click track. My questions refer to:

a- How to hook up Logic and MS2 via IAC?

b- How to sync them so that hitting Play in MS triggers Play in L9?

c- Would this require me to manually open different L9 sessions per patch?

IMHO, this is were Apple droped the ball with MS2. So many features and no support for midi files? This alone sort of defeats the idea of MS as a all in one live performance solution. Having to use two apps for one purpose can cause unnecessary tax on CPU. Any way, Tag, you're it.

Hi there,

I dont know if you have any midi gear but with a cheap Korg nanoPad you can program a pad on the korg to bypass a effect in mainstage. You can even use it for triggering your backing tracks.

Or use a Behringer FCB1010.

Hey Dpiano.

No I don't have midi gear, plan on getting FCB1010, but what I want to do still stands. This is because I play guitar and sing lead vocals in my band. My keyboard player keeps the laptop by his side, so he launches playback and patch changes.

Thing is, I'm actualy a drummer, so I'm new to the dynamics of being a guitarist/ frontman. And, since we are playing to a click, we might as well automate stuff like effect

Changes etc. It would be a pain to have to let go of my guitar, look down, find a button & press it accurately wile looking cool 8)

Hey, pardon me for piping in....

I GET what you are asking, and sadly I don't use Logic, so I can't help out that way.

I DO however use Mainstage, and an FCB 1010.

I must say that really, you have 2 choices as to how to do this:

1. You are a slave to your sequencer, and you allow the sequencer to handle all automation tasks so you can focus on your guitar playing and your singing.

(Been there, and done that since 1998, excited that I have Option 2:)

2. You build an elaborate Mainstage setup up with Songs and Patches that will REMEMBER that you want these effects on, and those effects off etc.

Since you already have an FCB 1010, you are in luck, because you can program that sucker to do ANYTHING YOU WANT!

You won't see mine in action at the link below, but you will in a few weeks.

You want some vocal delay on Song "A" during the Chorus? Assign it to a switch on the FCB. You want guitar FUZZ on Song "A" for the Verse? Assign it to a switch!

You want Tap Tempo? Assign it to a switch! You want all of your switches to stay the same during your performance? Can do!

You want your FCB to operate differently on a per song basis? Can do!

I would say you need to put your head together with the other dude in your band, and collaborate on a Mainstage project for your show.

He can use his MIDI controllers, you can use your FCB on one computer, one Concert, and ROCK tha house.

Thanks man. I'm more interested in option 1, cuz in truth , I'm not a guitar player, so my pedal to guitar coordination isn't great. Then throw singing lead on that, makes for a not to enjoyable show for me. I'll still work on those skills, but for now, let me slave to the sequencer.

Cheers

P.S.: Alma Itana suena cabrón loco :D

Cheers, mate! Don't forget the "duende!!"

Let me make myself clear, I and NO ONE else can actually criticise you for being a "slave to the sequencer"

I did it for years but now, I m enjoying a very different world all together:

A world that offers me the capability to improvise in the moment.

I would not give that up for ANYTHING.

For me, the response of the audience is far more important than my own intuition, and this is something it has taken me YEARS to learn.

Most incredible performers wouldn;t DREAM of relying on a computer, but Mainstage makes the idea of NOT relying on a computer possible.

To better illustrate my example, imagine THIS:

You sing the Chorus to one of your songs, and the audience responds very positively to that, in fact, they are singing along with you, even though they don't really know the lyrics 100%.

Would you NOT want to repeat that Chorus again for their benefit, and to help them get on board with your songs?

When you are a slave to the sequence, you cannot possibly expect to do that.

You have no choice but to "lose" their attention span as you move to the bridge.

Maybe as a performing musician you don't care about what your audience thinks, and that is also valid.

But for me, it is the constant interchange/interplay/exchange between myself and the audience that makes the whole thing worth doing in the first place.

Otherwise, it is simply:

"Hey everybody! Look at me!"

instead of

"Hey everybody! Look at us!!!!"

Just my two cents...

I'm looking for the same solution as well. I would like MainStage to change some effects for me during a concert. Sometimes I want a delay to open for me in a part of the song and sometimes a special fx or whatever.

My show is running with click and some backtracks, so MainStage will be running all the time.

But, since I'm a lead vocalist and don't want any pedals on the floor it would be great to have MainStage changing stuff for me. Isn't that possible?

I'm a newbie and working with MainStage, setting up all tracks this week.

I really love the automated things in Logic. I thought it might be possible to either import those to the Mainstage tracks or maybe in sync with Logic?

Is there any way to do something like this?
