pianolass
Hi I am working on a track at the moment, and I have noticed that the piano in it (which is quite prominent) is very very low. I have tried recording it in again, and the problem persists. It seems the level on the channel doesnt even go 1/3 of the way up on the meter. When I choose a different sound (guitar or bass, even strings) with exactly the same settings on my midi keyboard and interface - the level / signal is really strong - almost peaking. I have tried different piano sounds, removing the EQ etc - but they all seem very similar. The pianos I am using are the ones that come with logic and mostly seem to be from the Exs24 synth (other instruemnts being used from this are fine - strong input signal). However I have tried other pianos from Garageband, and G4 and the problem persists. Is this just the pianos in Logic? Or is there a way of boosting the signal input? I have tried just making the velocities higher, but this just makes it sound plinky plonky - as I am a pianist I want a nice sounding piano where I can get a good variation of tone and dynamics. Help please! Thanks in advance.
Rev. Juda Sleaze
You can increase the output from the EXS24 (which usually defaults to -6dB), or insert a Gain plugin on the channel strip to make it louder.
involver
Another option is to turn everything else down (and turn up your volume control). This is better as it allows headroom which means that you are less likely to get unwanted distortion. The dynamic range of 24bit recording is more than enough to cope with this.
