gdgross
Apologies for the simplicity of this question, I'm sure y'all do this with your eyes closed. How to I use external samples in Logic? I just bought the Kirk Hunter solo strings (exs), but I can't figure out how to get Logic to recognize them. I've been using logic for years, but mainly as a recording/mixing platform with actual audio instruments. I believe I'm supposed to drop them into the sampled instruments folder under he user I log in as, but that doesn't seem to be working properly. Either I'm in the wrong folder (don't think so since I see all the usual logic-included instruments there) or I'm missing some basic file or something. Any ideas? I'm using logic 9 on a new ish MacBook pro/lion Thanks!
David Nahmani
I just bought the Kirk Hunter solo strings (exs), but I can't figure out how to get Logic to recognize them. The KH solo strings come with an installer? If yes, just run the installer, then create a software instrument track, instantiate the EXS24 and find your strings in the Library. If they don't come with an installer, drag the EXS files to ~/Library/Application Support/Logic/Sampler Instruments/ manually.
gdgross
There's no installer, just instructions on where to drop the files. I've attached a pic of the finder window showing where I've put the files. Not sure if logic is picky about the file structure or if I did it right either. Once that's done, how do find them? I was able to open the exs24 window, but I'm not sure where to kind those files... Thanks!
David Nahmani
I was able to open the exs24 window, but I'm not sure where to kind those files... Look in the Library (Media area to your right). Make sure the EXS24 has library focus (a white frame around the EXS24 on the left channel strip in the Inspector). If it doesn't, single click the EXS24 so you get a white frame around it. gdgross
Ok, that's easy enough, and I can see some of the instruments, but it doesn't look like they are organized properly. See the pic...
n6smith
It looks sorted correctly to me.. What in particular, are you referring to?
gdgross
I don;t think that's right. Look at number 19 LOL. PLus, I tried one with just a single note and didn't hear any sound when I played it back.
n6smith
#19 is a message telling you that the next section are the individual instruments...
gdgross
Wow, weird. My foot tastes pretty great! In my defense, I do wonder what all of the exs sounds are before #19, but perhaps I just don't understand the way exs instruments and their organization works. Loaded up a couple of the samples and I've got sound, at least. I sort of expected to have a little window pop up like adjusting a plug in, but I guess they don't work that way. ski
Everything from 0 - 19 are notes to the end-user (i.e., yoo!) Also, I've always found Kirks instructions to be very clear. So if you're not sure about where you put the files, just follow his instructions to double-check that everything's in the right location.
gdgross
Ok, I guess I just don't understand exactly the relationship between the exs files, the included wav files, the exs GUI, etc. When I select a software instrument in logic, it typically has a little GUI that allows me to adjust the parameters of that instrument. I suppose there is simply no equivalent window for software instruments that are external samples? Is there a tutorial on exs instruments? (in the manual maybe...) n6smith
After selecting a sound from the Library... Look on the lefthand side of Logic, below the Inspector.. and you will see EXS24 in a small box. Double click on that to open up the EXS24... David Nahmani
Then in the EXS24 you can click the "Edit" button to edit the sampler instrument... More about that stuff in the manual: EXS24 mkII
