This is for David Nahmani.

On page 149 of your book, you walked the user through changing the Settings > Recording popup to change the Overlapping Recording parameter from "Merge only in Cycle Record" to "Merge with selected regions".

My question is, I was able to record on top of the software instrument track regardless of whether the Overlapping Recording was set to "Merge only in Cycle Record" or "Merge with selected regions". This begs the question -- what was the purpose of guiding the reader through that exercise of changing the Overlapping Recording parameter when the exercise works identically for either setting?

Thanks.

I'm not David but they do work differently.

It does not work identically. You probably recorded a region on top of the original region, giving you two recordings, in two overlapping regions. My instructions yield a single region where both recordings are merged.

You're right! When I recorded over the same track with "Merge only in Cycle Record", it did end up creating another Midi Region on top of the one I was trying to record over, and I realized that when I dragged the MIDI region aside and found another one just under it.

Odd, why would Logic Express allow two MIDI regions to occupy the same area, it's unintuitive and confusing, especially since there is no easy way to flip through the overlapping MIDI regions. Can you think of any circumstance where someone would do things this way?

That's a good question. Meaning it's a question I don't have an answer to. ;)

Nope. Which is why I recommend using the "Merge with Selected Regions" setting in the book.
