CBA713
Friends, How many of you have sold your newish/still-working/relevant computers lately? I'm looking to sell my 15" MacBook Pro, 4GB RAM, etc... wondering what might be the best avenue... eBay, Craigslist, Amazon, etc.? This is not a FOR SALE thread, just listing the info in case any of you can tell me what I could fetch for something like that and where would be the best place to sell it? I think I spent nearly $2,000... would be happy to get half that. Anyone made any recent satisfying sales? Gimme some computer slingin' tips! Thanks! David Nahmani
Craigslist if you like human contact. There are pros and cons. Lots of flakes (at least here in L.A.), means a lot of time wasted, on the phone, waiting for someone to show up, etc... OTOH the transaction is handled live, so once the gear is gone the money is in your pocket. eBay if you're a computer-geek-recluse-type. Again, pros and cons. Less time wasted, kinda exciting to watch your auction unfold (hopefully), no BS, no flakes to deal with (mostly). But you'll have to package, and make a trip to the post office, or have UPS or Fedex pick up your package for you. Amazon... I've sold books through them, never anything else. Great experience selling my used books, can't comment on anything else. Best of luck!
CBA713
Thanks David! Yep, I figured those were the two most prominent options... I've sold a few things on Craigslist... mostly stuff that was too big to ship (rack-mount cases, etc.). I'm probably more of the former... recluse type, haha... so I may have to just go the eBay route. Hopefully it all works out! C

David Nahmani
Lots of flakes (at least here in L.A.) California's got the most of them You wouldn't believe. If I told you the stuff I went through you'd think I'm making it up. One guy called me like 12 times to explain that he absolutely NEEDED my Genelec monitors, I just HAD to hold them for him, he would pay cash, blah blah blah. I could have sold them faster, but my human side took over my capitalist side and I waited for him. When he showed up he started listening to the monitors for about 2 hours and 1/2. He didn't bring any CDs so I had to play a bunch of mine. The guy... just wouldn't leave anymore. I really thought he was going to end up not buying them... but he did pay cash, then asked me if I had a box for them. I didn't, but I gave him a big cardboard shipping box that was big enough to fit the two monitors. That was heavy so I offered to help him to his car. He replied he was... taking... the bus. The BUS! In L.A.? Who does that? I stressed out that once the sale was over I wouldn't be responsible if he dropped them or someone stole them from him. So I watched him WALK away carrying a huge super-heavy cardboard box with $4,000 worth of speakers in it. About 2 days later he called me back. He just learned he'd lost his job and all of a sudden needed the money more than the monitors. He offered to bring them back to me to get his money back minus $300 or something. I refused. I mean the guy was shady to start with, the whole thing sounded like a scam whether or not I understood how that worked, and even if it wasn't, for all I know he just dropped the box while getting off the bus and was going to return damaged speakers to me. Since that day I was concerned for my music studio as this guy now knew where I lived, what was there, and who knows what we talked about for 2 hours 1/2. I now try as much as possible to avoid letting strangers into my house to buy stuff. I now try to sell to friends at a huge discount. Less money for me, but MUCH less headache for me, a great deal for a good friend - it's all good.

Oceanviewstudio
Lots of flakes (at least here in L.A.) California's got the most of them You wouldn't believe. If I told you the stuff I went through you'd think I'm making it up. ... Sounds so very familiar! Moved to the States many years ago, sold all my stuff, including high end - at this time - Canton cinema surround, and all my project studio gear, and I was well equipped at this stage of my life. Guy came to check it out, wanted a bundle price, I mean, he wanted to buy everything, from books to television to Kurzweil PC-88 and Tascam Midistudio 688 and leather couch. He was shady too to say the least. Could not get rid of him for hours. Other people came too and i started to sell of single items, he stayed, watched and testing gear. Then he left. Later, late at night my both dogs alarmed. Good thing was, he had no clue that I had dogs, as my girlfriend was gone for the day with them. A german and a belgian shepherd in their prime and the german male was a giant at 64 kilograms and well trained. Nothing happened but I saw a guy jumping the fence after I opened the door and let them both out, I am 99% certain it was him, as it was nearly full moon. Be very careful who you invite into your home (even if you're confident/dumb about protecting it, you can't be in all the time)! To be honest, it suprises me that you guys would invite strangers into your home, especially with expensive kit around. Tsk!
