copying automation between tracks [SOLVED]

i'm trying to copy automation from one plug-in of a track to the same plug-in in another track but whenever i copy automation and paste it to another track the automation always gets added in an 'unused' 'slot 2' parameter and i'm not sure why

 

i select a track, copy the automation, then select the new track with the same plug-in and paste the automation on the region

but it just creates an empty automation parameter

 

what am i doing wrong?

I suppose because slot 2 is unused on that other track? Slot 2 means insert number two. You can either make sure the plug-ins are in the same insert number, or you can now move the parameter to another parameter by holding option as you choose the new parameter from the track header (in Automation view).

wow yes that fixed it! the plug-ins had to be in the same insert number

i would have never guessed

is there an easy way to drag the plug-in into a different insert number or do i have to make a new insert on top of the old one, then delete the old one?

You can move plug-ins around by command-dragging them:
