More of that jazz...

The second installment of my contemporary jazz numbers is here:

It's an old tune that I've had in sketch form for a few years. It came from a "mentoring" assignment when I was at college - performers were partnered with composers. It was originally written for double bass, vocal and guitar, with sampled beats made from a recording of the two performers hitting their instruments and singing in a practice room. The singer/guitarist did a runner before we could perform it, but she's now singing in it anyway thanks to the EXS and the fact I still have the old recording of them in the practice room!

I had thought that arranging it for more instruments would make it more cohesive, but it's had the opposite effect. Still, I wasn't really into continuity then, so there you are...

I've gone for a live studio feel again, little mistakes deliberately left in, all solos done on 1st take, not over-producing the mix etc.

As ever, all comments welcome.

Whoa, Musique Mechanique II is like the music from Phase IV (one of the best film soundtracks ever) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070531/ mixed with Zappa's "Spider of Destiny" from Sleep Dirt; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WxfNVC9HCTE

IMMENSE! :D

[EDIT: not the bassline I was thinking of, but one of the best moments of the film:

Hehe...

One of my favourite ever films. Probably because I was about 10 when I first saw it!

Speaking of weird flashbacks, I've found some strange connections between childhood films and musical influence. Maybe time to start a thread on that soon...

must be the most plectrum noise I've ever heard)

 Wow, what happened there? Did they have a mic just for the pick?

Nice one , though. There's a lot of Zappa stuff I've never heard....I should do my homework.

Well, my favourite two albums are "Over-Nite Sensation", largely for Tina Turner and the Ikettes amazing vocals - especially Montana's tape-effected vocals (3'22":

and the horns at 3'55")

My favouite of his orchestral compositions is "200 Motels". You seen that film?

I guess their supplier lied about having it in stock, the order's still open, they've told me the supplier is trying to get it in and they will email when it is ready to dispatch. The only option they've given me is to cancel the order, I just have to be patient I suppose

It's not the first time this has happened, a curse of liking obscure albums I guess...

Rev Sleaze, you've hit another one out of the park! Such a great live feel and loving the variety of sounds. And the trumpet - hard to believe it's not real! Is that actually sampletek's BOB trumpet? You've made it much more articulate than their demos.

Thanks very much Cam!

And yes, that is Sampletekk's BOB trumpet; I improvised the solo on a keyboard, tweaked slightly in the piano roll, then recorded subtle pitch-wheel movements to make it sound a bit more lively. I also used Hermode tuning.

Maybe I should sell this tune to Sampletekk for them to use as a demo

The problem of the Hermode Tuning function is: The internal instruments of Logic, EXS24 and so on support Hermode Tuning. External plugins actually almost don't support the tuning messages of Logic. So, if you would like to work with Hermode Tuning you have to ask the producer of your plugin to update its product.

Either Apple or Hermode Tuning will give all necessary information how to support the Hermode Tuning messages of Logic. The tuning data are basing in Midi Single Note Tuning Change, slightly modified for the communication between host and plugin.
