Does gain plugin create distortion, or just raise volume?

First off, I'm a newbie so go easy on me haha I've just mixed a song where I left way too much headroom, about 20 dB. I want to bring the the overall volume up to a more appropriate level (such as -6 dB) before mastering - so my question is... if I use logic's gain plugin on the master channel to boost the overall volume, will this create any distortion, or simply raise the volume?

 

I realise that I could just raise the volume faders of every track by highlighting all of them, but I find that this is inaccurate in keeping the relative volumes the same. Also I use volume automation on almost every track, so I can't use the volume faders anyway.

It will simply raise the volume. In your case, that's the perfect solution.
