peeb
I have just bought myself a Macmini Lion Server and i'm about to undergo the tedious task of installing all my software and plugins (and then their updates!) and sound libraries from scratch. I was thinking i might just clone my old computer but that seems like bad policy so i'm gonna start with a clean slate. Anyway, i have decided that anything that doesn't run in 64 bit is not coming with me. It's just more trouble than it's worth. So that is the end of Sampletank for me. It's been a good run, but it's over. Now, i already have Komplete 8 Ultimate, and of course, all of Logic's included libraries so that's a LOT of sound choices. But i've always found just having ONE other library of options for bread and butter sounds really makes a difference and helps keep things fresh for me. So does anyone have a favourite for things like this? I mentioned Machfive 3 because i have a cheap upgrade path available. It seems VERY powerful but i'm absolutely a preset tweaker so most of that will be wasted on me. It's really about the sounds. Any thoughts appreciated
Mr. V
The acoustic samples scripted instruments (Star Drums, keyboards, basses, piano) sound great but are very resource hungry. The Universal Loops and Instruments seems to borrow from PlugSound Pro: usable sounds. Biosphere sounds is another interesting synth, ambience palette to draw from. If you have K8 Ultimate and you're a preset tweaker (which is what I mostly do), then the M5 library and sound generating features, while very good, may not having anything unique to offer. The M5 3 interface is much easier to navigate than Kontakt.
peeb
Thanks Mr V. I really appreciate the feedback. The thing about being resource hungry is very interesting. In a funny way i'm not really looking for anything UNIQUE as such, just different. You know, a different castanet sound or a different upright bass. Just colours that bring difference to arrangements. If you bought 10 records that had a Wurli on them for example, they'd all be Wurlis, but they'd all be different and that would MAKE a difference. That's really all i'm looking for. But the CPU hog thing is a bitch. Thanks again
Mr. V
Someone asked a question about M5 3's streaming preferences over at Motunation, but never received a response??? If a person were just starting out, the instruments in Logic offer a wide range of sound to work with. Enough so, that one could make do if necessary. Adding M5 v3 to the mix would greatly expand the sonic palette with sounds ranging from useable to excellent. Some comparable to, maybe better than what's in K8. You could try asking questions over at the MOTU forum. To be clear, I really like the M5 3 interface!
peeb
Thanks again Mr V. As i said, the upgrade price is a bargain so i think i'll go for it. Just gotta chase up my M52 serial! And thanks for the heads up about Motunation. I quit using M52 a long time back because at the time it was buggy as hell in my Logic set up so i got used to living without it. And subsequently, i lost touch with the MOTU community. I'll go check them out
jtnyc
I used to use MachFive 2. I stopped because it was a cpu hog and was very generic sounding IMO, and I found Motu's support to be pretty lame. If you own Kontakt, there is a endless selection of 3rd party libraries out there. I would expand my use of Kontakt before spending money on MachFive. Kontakt is deep!.... Here are some links to some great kontakt libraries - http://www.soundiron.com/ http://8dio.com/ http://www.soniccouture.com/en/ http://www.hollowsun.com/index.htm http://www.ninevoltaudio.com/
peeb
Many thanks for the thoughts jtnyc. I'll definitely check out those libraries. I agree with you about M52 being "generic". And Kontakt is DEFINITELY deep! I have SO much to do in terms of installing things from scratch that i can just make this my last job and that gives me some time to research Thanks again
