dgc480
Hey guys, With acoustic guitar and vocals, I can almost always punch in / quick swipe edit so that you don't hear a pop/click or abrupt change. However, yesterday I tried to record an electric piano the same way, and I can't seem to get a clean punch in. I got a near perfect take the first time, but there's one chord that needs to be fixed. Regardless of how I quick swipe it, I always get a pop/click. Is punching in just not possible when recording electric piano? Idk if it has to do with the type of audio signal or what, but I have never had problems like this using signal from a microphone (vocals, guitar). Keep in mind I am not using midi, this is a yamaha electric piano recording stereo from the 1/4 outputs. I can't imagine having to get a perfect take for piano every time. There must be a better way.... Thanks for any advice, Dylan
David Nahmani
There's no reason it shouldn't work with electric piano. Try adjusting the length of the automatic crossfades for Quick Swipe Comping under Preferences > Audio > General.
dgc480
Thanks for the quick reply David. I will try that, but I still don't understand why it works fine for acoustic guitar and vocals with this crossfade length, and not for electric piano. Maybe it's just the nature of what and where I'm trying to punch in. Piano is more of a constant waveform, as opposed to the individual notes you get with guitar and vocals, so maybe that's why.... Along the lines of the crossfade length, yesterday I was also trying to put a fade on one of my audio takes. I took my take folder out of quick swipe mode, and then attempted to use the fade tool to fade in one of my audio takes. My intention was to then re-enable quick-swipe, and use the faded audio take. When I tried to create my fade-in, I was able to drag a box over the audio region, but I did not see the fade. It was only once I re-enabled quick swipe editing, and unhighlighted the beggining of the take (making it white) that the fade actually showed up. Is this just a glitch or something? thanks
David Nahmani
Not a glitch - you can't use fades inside a take folder. If you're happy with your comp, try flattening it and use the Junction pointer to adjust the location of the edits, then adjust the Xfades to your heart's content.. If you could post a screenshot of one of the clicky fade (after flattening so we can see the fade)?
dgc480
Aha! When I checked the crossfade length under preferences, for some reason it was at 0ms! I increased it to 10 ms and the pops/clicks are gone! Now, this makes me wonder, why would the default setting be so that there is 0ms of crossfade (basically no crossfade, right?). I would think Logic would assume you need crossfades when quick swipe editing....
David Nahmani
The default setting is 20ms. You either inadvertently messed with it earlier, or suffer some sort of preference file corruption. Glad to hear you sorted it out though!
