Castlebury Posted July 7, 2012 Share Posted July 7, 2012 Last couple of days I've been getting quite a few crashes a day in both 9.1.6 and 9.1.7. Going back and forth between the two trying to find a stable version so I can finish a mix. Here's what the crash report is spitting out. Anyone care to take a look and see if you see something obvious. I would certainly appreciate it. Had to cut some of the report but at least it gets through all of the threads. The bigger questions here are: 1) What were you doing prior to the crash? For example, did you simply hit Play and then Logic crashed? Or did you click on a particular window or track and then Logic crashed? 1a) Does the crashing happen consistently when performing the same action? = OR = 2) Does the song load up, work for a while, then spontaneously crash? Or is it something else? These are the kinds of details which are more telling than the crash report itself. It would also help to describe the nature of your session, i.e., what kinds of tracks (audio only, instruments only, mixture, etc.). Also, plugins... using any kraks? It doesn't seem to be tied to any one particular action although today it seemed to occur more when I was trying to save. Yesterday I was getting them when I was trying to bounce a mix. I'm at the mix stage of this particular project and so it's all audio and mix oriented plugs at this point. No virtual tracks. All plugs are legal so no cracks. Using mostly Waves and IK T-Racks. Todays behavior seemed to just get worse and worse until I couldn't do much of anything but try and load the song. Logic would crash and do it's best to give me a crashed version of where I was at the point that it crashed. I have been working in 9.1.6 for most of this project although as of yesterday I started seeing crashes and tried opening in 9.1.7 and seemed to be having better luck. I'm at OS 10.6.8 on my tower so have not gone to Lion there yet. I was in 9.1.7 when things started going south today. Out of desperation I re-downloaded 9.1.7 and installed and have been working since then without a crash. Not sure what to think of that. In the last couple of days I have dumped my Logic Preferences and reloaded the latest version of ProKit trying to get back to stable land. Prior to downloading 9.1.7 when it came out my rig very rarely crashed but since then things have been pretty flaky. As of a little while ago I couldn't get my 9.1.6 to load without crashing. Prior to downloading 9.1.7 when it came out my rig very rarely crashed but since then things have been pretty flaky. May I suggest that once you achieve a stable system on any particular rev of Logic, put a halt on any further updates. That's not to say that you wouldn't (potentially) have experienced this same behavior with 9.1.5 or any other version. There's simply no way to have 100% trust and assurance that updates are benign, despite what other people do, despite what it might say in the release notes. Stability, on the other hand, is something you can sink your teeth into. OK, with that out of the way, some troubleshooting... • Do you have a ton of regions in your audio bin? Like, hundreds? This is a known cause of instability. If that's the case, use the "select unused regions" function and delete them from the bin. • What's your buffer set to? • Have you repaired permissions or done a disk verification check lately? As to re-installing, it's good that this seemed to work, though it seems like a "voodoo" fix . But hey, if it works, it works! Wish I could shed more light on why it worked. Hopefully that fix will last. (BTW, thanks for mentioning this because I've been tempted to re-install Logic myself due to flaky behavior). This is a question to David or anyone else who might know... is there any risk of introducing flakiness into Logic's performance by switching back and forth between 9.1.6 and 9.1.7 on the same project? I suppose in my current state Logic would assume that 9.1.7 was the version that was installed on my system so I wonder if in using 9.1.6 it was confused somehow. I'm sure I do have quite a few audio regions in the old bin since I'm post overdubs. Never occurred to me to clean those out so that's a good place to check as well. Buffer is cranked all the way up since I'm mixing and yes I have repaired permissions as recently as yesterday when things started to go south. That's always my first troubleshoot. Voodoo or not I have still been crash free since the reinstall so I'm not going to rock the ethereal boat here and just keep trying to be productive. I will dump the excess baggage in the audio bin.
